Gaston Veuvenot Leroux, Schlangenbeschwörer 19. Jh., an der Plinthe signiert G. Leroux, Bronze dunkel patiniert, junger Mann, mit Lendenschurz bekleidet und eine Flöte spielend, auf naturalistisch gestalteter Plinthe mit architektonischem Fragment, Kaktus und sich windender Schlange, auf ornamental verzierten Sockel aus Bronze aufgesteckt, altersgemäß gut erhalten, H 72 cm. Künstlerinfo: französischer Bildhauer und Medailleur (1845 Paris bis 1942 Bordeaux), 1874–1877 besuchte die Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien, wo er unter Direktor Carl Kundmann Bildhauerei studierte, er wurde wohl auch von Gustave Deloye unterrichtet, ab 1881 am Bereich Bildhauerei an der Akademie der schönen Künste in Paris unter François Jouffroy, 1893 erhielt er eine Professur für Bildhauerei an der Akademie in Bordeaux, wo er auch als offizieller Bildhauer der Stadt tätig war und zahlreiche öffentliche Aufträge ausführte. Leroux on the plinth, dark patinated bronze, young man, dressed in a loincloth and playing a flute, on a naturalistic plinth with architectural fragment, cactus and writhing snake, mounted on an ornamentally decorated bronze base, in good condition for age, h 72 cm. Artist information: French sculptor and medallist (1845 Paris - 1942 Bordeaux), 1874-1877 attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied sculpture under director Carl Kundmann, he was probably also taught by Gustave Deloye, from 1881 at the sculpture department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris under François Jouffroy, in 1893 he was appointed professor of sculpture at the Academy in Bordeaux, where he also worked as the city's official sculptor and carried out numerous public commissions. GASTON LEROUX FRENCH, 1854-1942 BRONZE FIGURE OF AIDA Signed 'GASTON LEROUX PARIS' on the base, with reddish brown and green patina, Aida is seated upon a sphinx mask and holds a tambourine Catalogue note: Gaston Laroux was born in Paris in 1854. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon and the international exhibitions during the late 19th century. He won awards in 1882 and 1883, 1885 and a bronze medal at the Exposition universelle of 1889 as well as that of 1900. He is most commonly known for his works relating to the "Orientalist" movement, and received much acclaim for his original figure of Aida. See P. Leroux (Gaston) The Phantom of the Opera, first English edition, 6pp. advertisements and 32pp. publisher's catalogue for Autumn 1910 at rear, very occasional spotting, pencil inscription "File Copy" and ink inscription "please return to Curtis Brown" to front free endpaper (a little chipped), hinges cracked but firm, original black cloth lettered and decorated in white, spine rubbed, spine ends chipped, some splitting to head and foot of upper joint, corners a little worn, light marking to upper cover, 8vo, Mills and Boon, Limited, 1911. *** Leroux's classic gothic mystery novel, in the rare black cloth. Copies are usually found in either red or black cloth bindings with the latter seemingly far more rare though without any established priority. Albert Curtis Brown (1866-1945) was a prominent literary agent who worked closed with Mills and Boon during this period.
