      J. LEROUX (1788-1870), Composer Rouget de Lisle, 1830, Etching

      Est: €450 - €600

Jean Marie Leroux (1788 Paris - 1870 ibid.): Portrait medallion of the French composer Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (1760-1836), 1830, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: At the lower part signed in the printing plate: "Sculpte par P. J. David / Gravé par Leroux". At the lower part dated: "=1830=". Date: 1830 Description: David d'Angers was one of the most important portrait sculptors of his time, leaving behind over 500 portrait medallions that captured almost all the important artistic and political personnel of the era. One of these decisive figures was Rouget de Lisle, who immortalised himself for the French people on the night of 26 April 1792 when he composed his war song "Chant de guerre pour l'armée du Rhin", which only a short time later resounded from a thousand throats as "La Marseillaise". Unlike David's medallion, in which a slightly lowered head with wild hair testifies to a certain humility, Leroux's etching shows Rouget de Lisle in the midst of his song with his head proudly raised, seemingly looking upwards. With the small eruptions at the edge of the imagined stone slab, the artist illudes a monument that has existed for a long time and, through this temporality, removes any doubts about its sublimity. Keywords: La Marseillaise, Music, Composer, France, Sheet music, Medallion, Profile, 19th century, Biedermeier, Portraits, France, Size: Paper: 33,5 cm x 25,2 cm (13,2 x 9,9 in), Depiction: 29,5 cm x 22,5 cm (11,6 x 8,9 in)
