Lesrel's pictorial works not only evoke the figure of a "musketeer", but that of handsome and urbane individuals, endowed with a refined education, cultural sophistication and impeccable elegance in their clothing. Although presenting a subtle sense of humor, these paintings seem to have captivated art collectors who identified themselves as the contemporary equivalent of the 17th century figures portrayed in the works. From the 1880s, Lesrel's work found a favorable reception in both London and the United States. His creations were frequently featured in the auction catalogs of the American Art Galleries in New York, as well as in the prestigious Arthur Tooth and Sons gallery in London. Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel, born in Genêts, France, near Mont-St.-Michel, was inspired by the mystique of the place and its surroundings for his artistic career. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Louis Ernest Meissonier, exhibiting for the first time at the Salon in 1865. Initially influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he evolved towards depicting the time of King Louis XIII. His works, portraying urbane and sophisticated men of the 17th century, attracted collectors in both London and the United States from the 1880s. Lesrel, recognized with an honorable mention at the Universal Exposition of 1889, maintained a successful career and joined important artistic societies. Retiring to Genêts in 1907, he continued his artistic work until his death in 1929, even surviving the First World War.

He was born in Genets and had his artistic training under Jean-Leon Gerome, whose style he followed. His paintings are in the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Nantes and the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Rouen. During the 19th century people developed a vivid fascination for the past. This was particularly true in France where memories of the recently deposed monarchy were still strong and the political situation was volatile. Paintings emphasized the human qualities of the subjects, and in Lesrel's works he alludes to the paternal qualities of the monarchy by painting the King's men at ease in their domestic situations. He specialized in historical genre paintings. At a 2012 Sotheby's auction, one of his paintings, The Practice Recital, was sold for US$86,500.

The current highest auction record for a similar painting by Lesrel is more than €118,000 Adolphe-Alexandre Lesrel painted almost exclusively interiors in the style of 17th century Dutch painting. His works show a great talent for the plasticity of different materials, the expressiveness of figures and a love for details. In addition, his paintings are characterized by a wide range of colors and a sophisticated lighting. Condition: The painting is in good condition with some craquelure due to age and minor pigment losses. The inspection under UV light reveals scattered areas of retouching to the figures and the foreground. The dimensions are 65.5 x 52 cm.
