Ungarn 1956. Austrian photojournalist Erich Lessing, full Magnum member since 1951, worked in the post-war years as one of the few Western reporters in the countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc. When the Hungarian Revolution rose, he was on site and became internationally known with his photographs. After the fighting, the Russians left thousands of their dead behind, which the Hungarians sprinkled with lime to disinfect them, as happened to this Soviet tank officer.

Erich Lessing, best known for reportage shaping the collective memory of post-war political history, was also commissioned by Magnum to document the filming of the final scenes of John Huston's adaptation of “Moby Dick”. The shot shows the scene in which Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck) gets tangled in the ropes of his harpoon in his fight with the white whale and drowns as the animal dives. On resurfacing, his loose right arm seemingly beckons the rest of the crew. The spooky effect of the scene was further dramatised by water fountains splashed into the set in addition to the swell.
