HENRY VICTOR LESUR (France, 1863-1900). "The Promenade. Oil on mahogany panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Slight lack of polychromy in the frame. Measurements: 63 x 80 cm; 100 x 116 cm (frame). Henri Victor Lesur was born in Roubaix on 28 April 1863. His early years, before he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, remain a mystery. At the École he studied with François Flameng, an academically trained artist who also painted scenes influenced by the 18th century masters. Flameng's painting and tutelage were decisive in shaping the style and subject matter of Lesur's painting. Lesur made his debut at the 1887 Salon with Saint Louis Enfant Distribuant des Aumônes (Young Saint Louis Distributing Alms), for which he received a third-class medal, an impressive debut for a young artist. In the same year he also received a travel grant. As most of his works for the Salon are portraits, and not views inspired by his travels abroad, it is not known where he went. These portraits, given Lesur's talent and his interest in depicting subjects and figures that evoked past eras of pomp and splendour, must have found suitable patrons among the bourgeoisie who were looking for a glamorous and idealised way of showing themselves. Among them, Portrait of M.J. Stirling Dyce (Portrait de M.J. Stirling Dyce), Salon of 1888; Portrait of M.M. Caplain (Portrait de M.M. Caplain) Salon of 1890; Portrait of M. Alfred Loreau (Portrait of M. Alfred Loreau) and Député du Loiret (Deputy of the Loiret), Salon of 1892; and, finally, Portrait de Mlle. Wanda de Boncza... (Portrait of Mlle. Wanda de Boncza), exhibited at the 1895 Salon. Lesur also took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900, where he received bronze medals.

BIOGRAPHY: Born in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Henri-Victor Lesur was just seven or eight years old when the Franco-Prussian war broke out. It was a tumultuous period in France. Leading up to these struggles, France's history had been punctuated by other social and economic ills, brutally portrayed by the adherents of Realism, who had been given a strong presence in society not only through their works displayed at public exhibitions, but also through the writings of Emile Zola and the art critic and champion of Realism, Champfleury. While Realism continued to be a strong presence guiding the work of many artists, some grew weary of these depressing images and sought to assuage their wounds by admiring the gay images reminiscent of eighteenth century French artists such as Antoine Watteau, Franсois Boucher, and Jean-Honore Fragonard. For a moment the public could revel in these playful scenes and forget the ills that still plagued much of the population. One artist who portrayed daily life with the frivolity of past masters was Henri-Victor Lesur whose images represent an era of bygone luxury and playfulness, set against the backdrop of Paris.Lesur's treatment of such compositions and figures is not without a social underpinning, which was most likely an unconscious effort on Lesur's part. In a discussion over the changing environment and circumstances that led to a shift from Realism to Naturalism, Gabriel Weisberg also provides a fitting comment on the society which looked for pictures like Lesur's.

He was awarded medals for his portraits at the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles as well. In addition to his primary artistic focus, Lesur also painted genre scenes of fashionably dressed women such as the two young ladies in the present courtyard vista. Lesur enjoyed depicting the more playful side of French society and he did so with a vivid use of color. He exhibited at the Salon for the last time in 1895, five years before his death.
