    Oil on panel Giuseppe Augusto Levis (1873-1926) - Italian painter Signed ‘GA (ligated) Levis’ and dated ’12-1.1912’ lower right Dimensions: 31 x 44.5 cm In gilt wooden stucco frame: 52 x 65 cm Provenance: Private collection, Uruguay Around 1900, European painters focused more and more on the depiction of motifs captured in foreign countries; in 1912 Levis went to Libya on the occasion of the Italian-Turkish war Condition: The painting is in very good condition, showing a small paint chipping to the upper margin. No evidence of retouching under UV light. The frame is slightly chipped and shows traces of an inactive woodworm infestation. Giuseppe Augusto Levis (1873-1926) Born in Chiomonte, Giuseppe Augusto Levis devoted himself to his passion of painting after a few years of studies at a law school; beginning in 1897, he presented his work at his first exhibitions. His artistic output seems to be documented completely starting from 1900. From 1901 to 1902 he was a pupil of Lorenzo Delleani. In 1909 he undertook a journey to Holland and painted vedutas in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. In 1912, he went to Libya on the occasion of the War of Tripoli. There he was inspired by the special North-African light; he also created erotic motifs, which were common at that time. In his late work Levis painted expressive landscapes.
