      Ekstase. Pastell auf Leinwand. 109 x 76 cm. Unten rechts signiert und datiert "M. Levis/1895". Der Bildnis- und Figurenmaler Max Levis war in den Jahren 1881/82 Schüler von Theodor Poeckh und Ferdinand Keller an der Akademie in Karlsruhe. Anschließend wechselte er nach München an die Akademie und studierte unter Johann Herterich und Ludwig von Löfftz. Vielleicht hat Levis dort noch kurz Gabriel von Max als Akademieprofessor für Historienmalerei erlebt, der aber bereits 1883 seinen Titel und sein Amt zurückgab. Vorliegendes Gemälde erinnert deutlich an das Werk von Gabriel von Max. Letzterer malte zahlreiche Mädchenporträts mit spirituell-religiöser Thematik. Von 1888 an war Levis in Wien ansässig. Das Wien im Fin de siècle setzte sich ebenso mit Religion und Spiritualismus auseinander und vor diesem Hintergrund wurde auch die Rolle von jungen Frauen in der Kunst sowie in der Literatur kontrovers diskutiert.
