Alphonse Levy, French, 1843 to 1918, an antique patinated bronze sculpture depicting Rabbi holding a Torah and praying. The sculpture is adorned with a Gold patina. Signed, Alph. Levy, on a base. Mounted on the round shaped base. Alphonse Jacques Levy is known for landscape, seascape, and portrait paintings, and sculpture. He was born in Marmoutier, France on January 8, 1843. Although he moved to Paris at age seventeen and begun studying art, his best-known works are the exaggerated yet affectionate portrayals of the rural Jewish community he knew as a child. He produced his first caricatures of rural Jewish life for Leon Cahuns La Vie Juive published in 1886. This was followed two years later by Sachor Masochs Contes Juives. In 1902 Levy published Scenes familiales juives, focusing solely on his caricatures. It is the most complete collection of his depictions of Alsatian Jews. Although Levy appropriated the stereotypical images of Jews, he intended such scenes to demonstrate their traditional charm. He sought to infuse stock images with levity, humanity, and humor, the associations he had with his childhood. Bekannt wurde er vor allem durch die Darstellung der jüdischen Bürger im Elsass und im damaligen Französisch-Algerien, hier: Straßenszene in jüdischen Viertel von Wissembourg mit Blick auf ein prächtiges Anwesen. Links auf einer Straße 3 Menschen, die einen beladenen Karren ziehen, Bleistift und Aquarell, 38 x 52 cm, mit kleineren Fehlstellen vor allem im Himmelsblau, r. u. sign. u. bez. "Wissembourg" Alphonse Lévy stammte aus einer gut situierten jüdischen Familie von Händlern, die sich 1848 in Straßburg niederließ. Nach dem Besuch des Lycée Fustel-de-Coulanges in Straßburg, ging Alphonse Lévy nach Paris, wo er das Atelier von Jean-Léon Gérôme frequentierte und sich mit Carolus Duran anfreundete. Er studierte intensiv das Werk von Honoré Daumier und von Rembrandt, der die Juden in Amsterdam zeichnete. Ab 1876 dokumentierte er in seinem Werk das jüdische Leben im Elsass. Im Jahr 1886 illustrierte er das Buch La Vie juive (Das jüdische Leben) von Léon Cahun und in dieser Zeit wurde er ständiger Mitarbeiter der Zeitschrift Le Monde illustré. He became best known for his depiction of Jewish citizens in Alsace and what was then French Algeria, here: Street scene in Jewish quarter of Wissembourg with view of a magnificent estate. On the left on a street 3 people pulling a loaded cart, pencil and watercolour, 38 x 52 cm, with minor missing parts especially in the sky blue, on the right signed and inscribed "Wissembourg" Alphonse Lévy came from a well-off Jewish family of merchants who settled in Strasbourg in 1848. After attending the Lycée Fustel-de-Coulanges in Strasbourg, Alphonse Lévy went to Paris, where he frequented the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme and became friends with Carolus Duran. He studied intensively the work of Honoré Daumier and of Rembrandt, who drew the Jews in Amsterdam. From 1876 he documented Jewish life in Alsace in his work. In 1886 he illustrated the book La Vie juive (Jewish Life) by Léon Cahun and during this time he became a permanent contributor to the magazine Le Monde illustré. Alphonse Levy (French, 1843-1918) - Exposition des Oeuvres de Alphonse Levy, Lithograph Poster, 1897. Signed in the plate. Plate: 61x40cm. Minor tears. Alphonse Jacques Levy was born in Marmoutier (Bas-Rhin), France on January 8 1843 into a family of wealthy merchants, religious Jews who settled in Strasbourg after the anti-Jewish riots in the revolution of 1848. He attended the Imperial High School where he discovered a passion for drawing. In 1860, he moved to Paris where he attended the studio of Jean-Leon Gerome and became close friends with Charles Auguste Emile Durand, known as Carolus-Duran. He studied the work of caricaturist Honore Daumier and that of Rembrandt, who had repeatedly represented the Jews of Amsterdam. In 1865 his caricature drawings began to appear in various publications where the manners of the time or politics were being paorodied. During the War of 1870 and the Commune, he published cartoons hostile to the Second Empire and supported the Commune under the pseudonym Said. When peace returned he returned to more documentary subjects and illustrated the book by Victor Tissot The Prussians In Germany: Suite Voyage Au Pays Des billion. He also illustrated a volume on the Oberammergau Passion. Around 1876 he began drawing lithographs devoted to family Jewish life in Alsace. He had an exhibition in 1886 titled The Jewish Life. He worked as an illustrator at the periodical Le Monde Illustre. In 1903, he published his collection of Jewish family scenes, which was badly received in the Parisian Jewish community, which accused him of showing a wretched and ugly humanity, while receiving rave reviews from the German Jewish journal Ost und West. However, he was recognized by art critics and the Luxembourg Museum bought and exhibited some of his lithographs. In 1874, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and was a medalist for lithography at the Universal Exhibition of 1900. Having befriended another Jewish painter, Jules Benoit-Levy (1866-1952), whose family moved to Algiers. Beginning in 1904 he spent each winter in Algeria where he painted, without using caricature, the communal Jewish life. His work is, by its documentary value, testimony of two kinds of Judaism, the Ashkenazi rural Alsatian Judaism and traditional Judaism of the North African Sephardics, who both have since disappeared.
