Rudolf Levy Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1875 - d. 1944

Rudolf Levy (15 July 1875, Stettin - January 1944, Italy or Auschwitz) was a German Expressionist painter of Jewish ancestry.

He came from an Orthodox family. While he was still a boy, they moved to Danzig, where he grew up. After completing his primary education, he was apprenticed to a carpenter. His parents were strongly opposed to his desires to become an artist but, in 1895, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe.

In 1897, he and his friend, Hans Purrmann, went to Munich to open a studio. While there, he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich with Nikolaus Gysis then, in 1899, took lessons at the private art school operated by Heinrich Knirr and studied plein aire painting with Heinrich von Zügel. He also became a member of a cultural association known as "Sturmfackel" (a type of poppy), that met at the Café Stefanie. In the fall of 1903, he went to Paris and established a circle of German-speaking artists who met at Le Dôme Café. Two years later, he participated in the third exhibition of the Salon d'Automne at the Grand Palais. In 1907, he worked at the newly founded teaching studios of Henri Matisse. Between 1910 and 1913, he made regular trips to the south of France and Tunisia.[1]

During the First World War, he volunteered and fought as a German soldier in Artois and Flanders. He was awarded the Iron Cross in 1915. After the war, he returned to Germany and married Eugenie Schindler (1894-1953), a photographer and actress who went by the name Genia Morelli.[2] They eventually settled in Berlin and, in 1922, he had his first solo exhibition, arranged by Alfred Flechtheim. From 1924 to 1926, he was back in Paris, serving as Flechtheim's agent. In 1928, he became a member of the Berlin Secession and served on its board of directors.

Five years later, due to the increasing persecution of Jews in Germany, he went to Rapallo, Italy, where he stayed with his friend and student, Bob Gesinus-Visser (1898-1978). In 1935, he went to Mallorca. After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he went to New York to stay with his friend, the actor Erik Charell. He did not want to stay there, however, and went back to Europe; first to Dubrovnik, then Ischia, where he lived at the artists' colony. He supported himself with occasional painting sales and financial aid from his family, including his now ex-wife, Genia.

In 1937, his works were placed on the list of Degenerate Art.[3] After World War II began, his residence permit was cancelled and he had to leave Ischia. Charell worked hard to obtain a visa for him to return to the United States or seek refuge in South America, but to no avail. In 1940, he was able to find a place to stay with friends in Florence.[4] After the German Army occupied Italy in 1943, he had to go underground.[5]

In December of that year, he was lured into a trap by SS agents pretending they were art buyers. He was arrested by the Gestapo, briefly imprisoned at Le Murate, then placed on a transport to Auschwitz. It is generally believed that he died while in transit, but may have survived until reaching there.

      Nov. 29, 2024

Rudolf Levy, Bildnis Nanda, Florenz, 1941

      Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Stamped "R Levy AUS DEM NACHLASS DES KÜNSTLERS" verso on the canvas. The “Bildnis Nanda” was created by the Jewish artist Rudolf Levy in 1941: it belongs to a series of outstanding portraits from the period he spent in Florence, which was defined by persecution, flight and existential danger. In this work, Levy – who trained at the Académie Matisse and was inspired by his friends at the Café du Dôme – has achieved a portrait displaying a concentrated composition and bold use of colour. A young woman is sitting calmly with her head resting on her hand at a table; her dark, Mediterranean complexion and blue-and-red clothing stand out advantageously against the turquoise-coloured background. The two-dimensionality of the table and the lack of emphasis on the torso cause the volumetric forms of the face and right hand to stand out particularly strongly. The focus of the portrait is the woman’s face: framed by the dark contour, it becomes a medium of expression. Like many of the likenesses created in Florence, such as “Porträt Herbert Schlüter” (1941) and “Fiamma” (1942), Nanda also conveys a sense of reservedness and melancholy. In his Florentine exile, Levy often painted portraits of emigrants who, like him, tended to feel vulnerable and anxious on account of their experiences and uncertain future. However, his own situation and that of his companions did not lead to a stylistic change in the direction of a dismal grey – instead, in the early 1940s, he returned back to the intense palette of the years he had spent in Paris. Portraits from the late period of Rudolf Levy’s oeuvre are extremely rare on the art market. Two preliminary drawings related to “Bildnis Nanda” exist, in which he played with the young woman's pose.

• Rudolf Levy, Blumenstillleben, 1919
      Dec. 04, 2021

      Rudolf Levy, Blumenstillleben, 1919

      Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Signed and dated 'R Levy 19' in green lower right. We would like to thank Susanne Thesing, Neudrossenfeld, for confirmatory information. With the pair of floral still lifes presented here and as the following lot, we are able to offer two works by the artistic companions Rudolf Levy and Walter Bondy. Around 1902 these men became friends in Munich, where they were attending private painting schools and were involved with the same circle of artists in Schwabing. They went to Paris together in 1903. Overwhelmed by their impressions of the city, they explored Paris's various quarters together. They chose the modest and then still unknown Café du Dôme in Montparnasse as a place to meet: it would subsequently establish itself as an illustrious centre for the foreigners among Paris's arts scene. In 1908 their personal contact with the much-admired Henri Matisse led to the founding of his private painting school, the “Académie Matisse”, which existed until 1912 and whose members included Hans Purrmann, Oskar Moll and Jules Pascin in addition to Levy and Bondy. In the summer months of the following years, the artists of the Café du Dôme also set out together for stays spent painting in rural France and, around 1910, the gallerist Alfred Flechtheim established connections with members of this circle. When Flechtheim presented the work of the Parisian circle of artists in an initial survey exhibition in Düsseldorf in 1914, Levy's and Bondy's paths initially took them in separate directions until they met again in Berlin in 1922. Further exhibitions of the circle of artists at Flechtheim's gallery and at Berlin's Freie Secession presented their works together. In 1921 Karl Scheffler described the kinship of their art, which also reveals itself in our two works: “The painters of the Café du Dôme are children of the great French traditions. They are progressive, but not revolutionary; they do not want to start over again from the beginning, but to develop what exists. They are all painters of the beautiful surface and defenders of the glorious culture of painting. This group is represented by Pascin and Großmann, Purrmann and Levi [sic!], Weißgerber, Ahlers-Hestermann, Bondy, Fritz Friedrich and others” (Karl Scheffler, cited in: Susanne Thesing, Rudolf Levy. Leben und Werk, Nuremberg 1990, p. 23).

Signed 'R. Levy' in red lower center to right. Verso signed, titled, and dated 'Rudolf Levy: Natura morta con fiasco. 1941' on upper stretcher bar. “That which is true of the late landscapes - the continuation and perfection of the style which reached maturity in the twenties - also applies to the painter's late still lifes. Here, as well, the magical component in the capturing of the objects and the coloristic concentration predominate, and it is specifically these qualities that cause the late still-life ensembles to become a cohesive group of works. In them, the sensual and rational experience of reality combine to form an autonomous pictorial cosmos, an aesthetic and logical order. The intrinsic value of the decorative, incorporated into the construction made up of objective elements and their mutual formal and chromatic relationships, defines Levy's notion of harmony. This finds exemplary expression in these compositions” (Susanne Thesing, Rudolf Levy. Leben und Werk, Nuremberg 1990, p. 182).

Signed and dated 'R Levy 1914' in green lower right. With a paper label verso on the canvas, thereon printed in black "SAMMLUNG FLECHTHEIM 166".The flower still-life on offer once belonged to the collection of the famous art dealer and gallery owner Alfred Flechtheim. During World War I his gallery, founded in 1913 in Düsseldorf, got increasingly into financial difficulties and had to be closed. Thus, Flechtheim auctioned off his gallery portfolio comprising 250 works in 1917. The “Orchideen” on offer was among them. The auction named “Galerie Flechtheim. Moderne Gemälde“ took place on 5 June 1917 in Berlin at Kurfürstendamm 208/209. As Flechtheim was stationed in Belgium as an officer during the war, the auction was conducted by the gallery owner Paul Cassirer from Berlin and Hugo Helbing, an auctioneer from Munich. This auction is regarded as the first to include contemporary art in Germany and was a far-reaching art event with international attention during World War I (cf. www.alfredflechtheim.com/en/trade/auktionen).

The distinctive charm of this rustic still life, which fits so well into the surroundings of its former home on Majorca, is based on its ostensible simplicity and the focused depiction of a small number of objects. In combination with the deliberate and abstract manner of its painting, this makes it simultaneously cheerful and intellectually captivating. Stylistically, this includes the emphatic use of colour and the wilful contours, the chromatic and painterly tonalities and the modernist two-dimensionality of the coloured patterns and individual forms: not only is the large cloth of the foreground remarkable in this respect but, in particular, the two round red circles of fruit, which set a strong optical geometrical accent shifted away from the centre. Perspective and space have largely been cast aside, instead, the objects at the centre of the painting are subjected to a rigorously - horizontal as well as vertical - axial arrangement. Rudolf Levy left Germany in 1933 and fled by way of France to Majorca, then in 1937/1938 to Italy - Ischia, Rome and Florence formed brief stations prior to his deportation. “The gathering momentum of fate seemed not to lame him but instead to spur him on to his highest achievements”, observes G.F. Hartlaub: “Certainly, Rudolf Levy adhered to what Matisse referred to as 'expression' while repeatedly preaching to his students. But he wanted to be expressive, not Expressionist. He also had no interest in replacing what Matisse called 'sensibilité' through a kind of ecstasy.” (from: Exhib. cat. Rudolf Levy, Oelbilder, Gedächtnis-Ausstellung, Frankfurter Kunstkabinett, Hanna Bekker vom Rath, Hofheim/Ts 1959, n.p.) Regarding his friend's work, Hans Purrmann had also already remarked: “The Expressionism of our native land, with the woodcut-like, chromatically wild aspect of its vision was recognised by us only with reservations, and we did not feel that it was a parallel movement to the 'Fauves'. We were too much under the power of the Latinate, to which our inclinations and inner affinity more powerfully pulled us.”

(Thesing, Susanne: Rudolf Levy. Leben und Werk. Nürnberg 1990, S. 180 f.)

Provenienz: Collection Nils Blumer (with the handwritten collector's note on the reverse).Westend Galerie, Frankfurt/Main 1982.Private collection Hesse. Together with Hans Purrmann, Rudolf Levy introduced the primacy of colour, as Henri Matisse, who cultivated it as he started out with the 'Fauves", to German painting, making it an interesting aspect that - devoid of the overly intellectual - reconquered for colour an existential right in painting. Not strictly linked to a particular form, as it was by the Expressionists, colour in the paintings of Purrmann and Levy is intoxicatingly celebrated as it is in Matisse. With economical means and deliberate neglect of extraneous painterly detail, Levy created an unparalleled visual sensuousness. [KD]In good condition, colours still fresh. Tiny colour chipping on the left of the signature. Upper right corner with small, aged, backed loss (?).
