Lewer is an established artist, who received the Basil Sellers Art Award in Melbourne in 2016 and is represented by Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney; Hugo Michell Gallery, Adelaide; and Suite Gallery, Auckland.

Richard Lewer Alphonsus O'Doherty 2006 graphite on rag museum board 1050mm x 845mm accompanied by original exhibition catalogue; original Oedipus Rex Gallery label affixed verso Exhibited: Get Well Oedipus Rex Gallery, November 2006 Lewer's subject matter gravitates towards what he has stated as an "unhealthy interest in human suffering". His work explores the extremes of behavior and the issues surrounding social construction. Recent bodies of work have included the Get Well series from the residency at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. Comprised of both portraits of the hospitals early carers' the Nuns - taken from the hospitals archives - alongside narrative based drawings that include his reoccurring character Mr Cruel - realised from CCTV footage and his experiences of the institution. Others include the drawings based around the events at Australia's worst serial killing in which a local group took it upon them selves to take care of the local disabled and misfits by chopping them up and disposing the subsequent parts into barrels. • Richard Lewer 20 Dollar Love acrylic and pastel on
      Oct. 16, 2007

Richard Lewer 20 Dollar Love acrylic and pastel on

      Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Richard Lewer 20 Dollar Love acrylic and pastel on steel title inscribed and signed 2350mm x 1140mm In Lewer's painting "20 Dollar Love" the charm is literally scrapped away giving us an altogether more confronting scene of sexual debauchery. Painted onto sheet metal with a vigorous if not violent eradication of the standard points of focus, Lewer leaves us reading the small samples of text that point to this being an embroilment with a lady of the night. Lewer induces a moment of pondering, is this another story from a tabloid, an event from his own past or an as yet unrealised fantasy. ALF

    • Richard Lewer No More Monsters mixed media on
      Oct. 16, 2007

Richard Lewer No More Monsters mixed media on

      Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Richard Lewer No More Monsters mixed media on steel title inscribe 500mm x 500mm Exhibited: Oedipus Rex Gallery Lewer's guileless execution has a charm that brings out a strangely appealing beauty of the macabre situations and events toiled over in the work. Yet we find his images and drive are not one of a morbid nature, but one that we all share, in the experience upon witnessing an accident or the reading of a murder in a paper, more specifically the "Truth". What Lewer shares with the tabloids is a demographic, the suburban and the sub cultural groups therein, though in a reversal of the later providing for the former. Richard Lewer was the winner of the National Drawing Exhibition 2004, joint winner of the Norsewear Art Awards 2006 and the Waikato National Painting and Printmaking Award 2006. Richard Lewer is represented by Oedipus Rex, Auckland; Mark Hutchins, Wellington and Legge, Sydney. Alex Le Feuvre
