LEWIS CASS (1782 - 1866) American politician and Secretary of War who directed the Black Hawk and Seminole wars. Fine content signed quote, 1p. large 4to., [Washington, 1849], an extract from his speech given on July 4, 1843 at Fort Wayne, Indiana upon the completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal. (and so noted at the top of the quote). In part: "...I have stood upon the plain of Marathon, the battle field of Liberty. It is silent and desolate. Neither Greek nor Persian is there to give life and animation to the scene. It is bounded by sterile hills on one side, and lashed by the eternal waves of the Aegean sea on the other. But Greeks and Persians were once there, and that decayed spot was alive with hostile armies, who fought the great fight which rescued Greece...I have stood upon the hill of Zion, the city of Jerusalem, the scene of our Redeemer's suffering...But here we are in the freshness of youth, and can look forward with rational confidence to ages of progress in all that gives power and pride to man, and dignity to human nature. It is better to look forward to prosperity, than back to glory...". A small tear at left margin, else very good. From the collection of Adam J. Glossbrenner, Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Representatives and later James Buchanan's private secretary.
