        Lucy M. Lewis (Native American, Acoma Pueblo, 1895 -1992). ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A miniature black-on white pottery olla jar with abstract figures of Kokopelli and zigzagging lines. The underside is signed by the artist. The fineline patterns were made famous by Lucy Lewis, and have since been used by many Acoma artists. Lewis' designs were inspired by the Mimbres-style pottery of her Ancestral Puebloan people. She made pottery using traditional coiling methods taught by her great aunt and was mostly self-taught. Her works grace museums across the world and she has been compared to Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso for her innovations. She was invited to the Whitehouse in 1983 and was awarded the Governor's Award of New Mexico for her contributions to the world of art. Considered one of the matriarchs of American Indian pottery, Lucy Martin Lewis spent her entire life in Acoma Pueblo, New Mexico. For more than seven decades, she practiced the art of making dung-fired white pottery, noted for its black "thin-line" geometric abstractions derived from ancestral designs. First sold at roadside stands, her pottery became so prized that it is now in museum collections, including the Smithsonian Institution.
