Original vintage travel advertising poster for American Overseas Airlines designed by the notable design team Lewitt-Him (1933-1955); Jan Le Witt (1907-1991) and George Him (1900-1981) featuring a bold illustration of large abbreviation AOA in yellow with arrows pointing the direction and a plane flying through the sky, white fluffy clouds and bright yellow sun set over blue background. AOA operated between the United States and Europe between 1945 and 1950. Printed in England by W.R. Royle & Son. Good condition, minor creasing, staining, small tears. Country of issue: UK, designer: Lewitt Him, size (cm): 96x61, year of printing: 1948.

American Overseas Airlines (AOA) employed Lewitt-Him to directly convey the 'shrinkage of time' at a time when airlines were competing to be the fastest and most reliable choice. The result is a surreal image which plays on the altered relationship between time and space brought about by the technological advancements of air travel.

Expert over-painting to top margin. A-. LeWitt and Him were Polish born artists who formed a design partnership in 1933 and produced numerous innovative designs for Britain’s Ministry of Information during World War II, London Transport, and AOA, in addition to book illustration and other commercial work. This is one poster from a series designed for AOA; one poster in the series is held at the Museum of Modern Art. Their partnership dissolved in 1954.

ARTIST: LEWITT-HIM (Jan Lewitt, 1907-1991; George Him, 1900-1982) SIZE: 24 x 38 1/8 in./61 x 97 cm PRINTER: W. R. Royle & Son, England DESCRIPTION: Towards the middle of World War II, the American Export shipping company purchased an airline and obtained permission to operate it across the Atlantic. Using Vought-Sikorsky flying boatsthe only craft able to make nonstop transatlantic flights at the timethey performed major military service until the war ended, and then became the first airline to operate transatlantic commercial flights. It was quickly snapped up for a substantial sum by American Airlines and renamed American Overseas Airlines. Beloved by buffs for its progressive organization (it was the first to operate the two-story Stratocruiser) AOA was, with TWA and Pan Am, one of only three lines operating across the Atlantic after the war. This poster, with its crisp, colorful, and iconoclastic graphics, make it crystal clear that AOA was the superior choice for transoceanic airborne travel. (Modern; Aviation; Travel)

LEWITT-HIM (JAN LEWITT, 1907-1991 & JERZY HIM, 1900-1981) FOOD NEEDS TRANSPORT / DON'T WASTE IT. 1944. 19 1/2x29 1/2 inches, 49 1/2x75 cm. Geo. Gibbons Ltd., [Leicester.] Condition A: minor creases in margins. Paper. Lewitt and Him were both born in Poland and met as young graphic designers. In 1933, they founded the Lewitt-Him studio and later immigrated to England in 1937. Deeply inspired by Surrealist painting, their work often played with words and images. They had an active and successful partnership designing propaganda posters during the war, and in the post-war years working on large campaigns for American Overseas Airways, the General Post Office, the London Underground and others. The two designers parted ways in 1954. The Poster 336.
