    Resting against a tree stump in the shadow of a rock, St John the Baptist points into the distance. At the time of Christ, he was a penitent preacher in the desert of Judea. A city in the distance symbolizes the inhabited world from which he turned away. As the first to identify Jesus as the Messiah, he is invariably depicted pointing to Christ. We also recognize his standard attributes such as the cross, camel's hair robe and the lamb. Signed "L" followed by the smaller initials "ME" next to it on a rock at lower left. The comfortable size, highly refined engraving technique, balanced design, fine watermarks and an inherent soft touch all contribute to the delight of this print.

Sold w.a.f. = New Hollstein 137, 1st or 3rd state. With the collector's marks of Friedrich August of Saxony (Lugt 971 on recto and 972 and 780a on verso) and unidentified collector's mark ("H" within circle). AND 3 sm. others after the same: copies of Paul (cf. NH 88, in reverse), Christ (cf. NH 86) and The Virgin with Child in the niche (NH 81, copy in reverse and without the niche).
