Pastel on paper. Signed 'A. Lhote' (lower right). André Lhote was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also active and influential as a teacher and writer on art. Lhote was born in Bordeaux, France, and learned wood carving and sculpture from the age of 12, when his father apprenticed him to a local furniture maker to be trained as a sculptor in wood. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1898 and studied decorative sculpture until 1904. Whilst there, he began to paint in his spare time and he left home in 1905, moving into his own studio to devote himself to painting. He was influenced by Gauguin and Cézanne and held his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Druet in 1910, four years after he had moved to Paris. After initially working in a Fauvist style, Lhote shifted towards Cubism. He was alongside some of the fathers of modern art, including Gleizes, Villon, Duchamp, Metzinger, Picabia and La Fresnaye.

The Picassian style, contemporary in time and place, is present in all his work. The theoretical work of this creator has been fundamental for the understanding of 20th century art. His plastic work goes through several stages, venturing into themes such as landscape, the nude, prostitution, life in the port, the bourgeois woman, among others. In many of these themes, we can appreciate his proximity to Fauvism, his distancing from the nineteenth-century sense of painting, his special imprint in the Spanish art of the twenties and a personal configuration of spaces, which makes geometries a malleable element for his narratives, which make everyday life and the popular world his main interests. After attending the sculpture course at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, he entered the world of professional painters. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1906 and at the Salon d'Automne the following year. He was attracted by Cubism, integrating the Section d'Or. He tried to adapt Cubism to classicism and therefore obtained the adhesion of a large number of amateurs who were frightened by the excessively radical changes, but in his works he denotes the purest academicism. In 1922 he opened an academy to spread his aesthetic thought, acting as an influential pedagogue. His theoretical work had great weight in the central decades of the twentieth century. Il est vrai qu’elle donne à voir toute la variété du talent du peintre, natif de Bordeaux, en présentant une sélection de pay sages, figures et natures mortes qui « attestent la maîtrise de ce grand coloriste, qui est à l’avant-garde de la peinture actuelle ». Le cri tique, Jacques Belgrand, choisit de s’attarder longuement sur ses paysages, « où il excelle ». Parmi ces derniers, a probablement figuré notre toile qui représente Mirmande, pittoresque village de la Drôme où Lhote organise des stages d’été pour ses élèves dans la maison qu’il a acquise en 1926. L’auteur de l’article met notablement l’accent sur les peintures que l’artiste consacre à cette cité « qui s’étage sur une colline d’où l’on domine la vallée du Rhône ». Il y vante ses « maisons en ruine, parfois sans toiture, de beaux arbres et des champs polychromes […], motifs très picturaux pour un peintre qui fut très influencé par le cubisme et en a conservé, très atténuées, il est vrai, certaines des formules ».
