Dunhuang was important to me for a number of reasons. The art there was real, some of it more than fifteen hundred yers old... In many cases the painting is rough, but I loved it because it is full of energy, in part because the artists worked on hard surfaces with temperas and gouache in opaque colors. So I played with opaque colors and Dunhuang styles on paper. Even today, I like to use opaque colors on dark background, which is an early Chinese tradition. The challenge is to use scheme elegently. Studying Dunhuang painting convinced me I could not start a new art without becoming familiar with as many traditions as I could." - (Michael Knight and Li Huayi, The Monumental Landscapes of Li Huayi, San Francisco: Asian Art Museum, 2004, pp. 43-45)

PROVENANCE Kaikodo, New York Acquired by the present owner from the above EXHIBITED San Francisco, Asian Art Museum, The Monumental Landscapes of Li Huayi, February - May 2004, pp. 88-89, illustrated in color NOTE "After nearly ten years of exploring abstraction combined with elements from early Chinese art, I felt I was ready to create something new in the most important Chinese painting theme: landscape. Not just landscapes, but monumental landscapes like those done during the Northern Song dynasty. I want my paintings to feel contemporary.... I think being contemporary means communicating your spirit...and being true to yourself and your time." - (Michael Knight and Li Huayi, The Monumental Landscapes of Li Huayi, San Francisco: Asian Art Museum, 2004)

PROVENANCE Roberta English Gallery, Sausalito Acquired by the present owner from the above NOTE "Calligraphy exemplifies what I feel is the semi-abstract nature of Chinese art. The form of every character exists, and therefore the calligrapher cannot make a new image; the characters have existed for thousands of years. What calligraphers can do is express themselves through individual brush stroeks. This is abstract" - (Michael Knight and Li Huayi, The Monumental Landscapes of Li Huayi, San Francisco: Asia Art Museum, 2004)

      B. 1948 EARTH LANDSCAPE 41 1/3 by 70 in. 105 by 177.8 cm. signed in Chinese, dated renwu (2002), and with four seals of the artist ink and color on paper EXHIBITED Shanghai Art Museum, Gao Shan Liu Shui I - Contemporary Ink Painting Invitational Exhibition, 2002, p. 33, illustrated in color NOTE Li Huayi is considered one of the finest in the world of contemporary Chinese ink painters. Following in the footsteps of the greatest 11th-12th century Chinese masters, Li has reinvented that inherited tradition, developing an innovative style based upon a deep understanding and practical mastery of the his materials. However, his training in Western art and a profound attachment to the actual landscapes he inhabits in Northern California have contributed to the unique qualities of his work. While the flesh and bones of Li's landscapes are thus rooted in both art historical sources and his own subjective experience, his works have a transcendent, even sublime quality. From an early series of the late 70s and early 80s to his most recent work, Lots 213 to 216 provide a brief glimpse of this extraordinary artist's development. Li Huayi was honored with the first retrospective solo exhibition of a living artist at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco in the spring of 2004, and his reflections at that time upon the various stages of his practice provide the most eloquent expression of his artistic goals and achievements.
