    GEORGES LIAUTAUD, HAITIAN 1899-1991, SHEET METAL MERMAID inscribed G.LIAUTAUD, pierced and molded Note: Born in Haiti, Liautaud started off as a blacksmith forging farm tools and crosses for the local cemeteries. Around 1953, his ornamental crosses came to the attention of American artist Dewitt Peters. He encouraged Liautaud to pursue a career as an artist and began promoting his work which included both Catholic and voodoo motifs, often made from hammered and cut sheet metal from empty oil drums. His work has been widely exhibited and is in the permanent collection of many institutions, including MOMA in New York.
