      Eduard Peithner v. Lichtenfels, Motif in Aschau/Wachau, c. 1900

      Est: €1,200 - €1,500

Oil on panel Germany/Austria, around 1900 Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (1833-1913) – Austrian landscape painter Signed (almost invisible) lower left ‘Lichtenfels’; also inscribed beneath ‘Lichtenfels.’ Dimensions: 26.5 x 20.5 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Austria Peithner von Lichtenfels is one of the most important protagonists of Austrian landscape painting; his compositions fetch up to €9,300 at international auctions The present small-sized painting is a characteristic work by the Austrian landscape painter Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels. It dates back to around 1900 and therefore represents a late work of his varied artistic output. The motif reveals an atmospheric view of a farmstead behind the lush tress of the summer. It is possible that the artist was inspired by a place in Aschau i. Chiemgau or even in Wachau, where he had regularly spent some time with his students, since 1888. It is known that his school of painting has finally trained the most impressive landscape painters from the Wachau region. The painting is almost invisibly signed lower left ‘Lichtenfels’; beneath, it has therefore been additionally inscribed ‘Lichtenfels.’. Inspection under UV light reveals the mentioned signature as well as tiny areas of retouching. The painting is still in very good overall condition. The panel measures 26.5 x 20.5 cm and the framed dimensions are 40.5 x 35.5 cm. Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (1833-1913) Peithner von Lichtenfels was the director of the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna, between 1878 and 1880, followed by a second tenure between 1897 and 1999. Besides he was professor of landscape painting, between 1872 and 1901. Born as the son of the philosopher Johann Peithner von Lichtenfels (1793-1866) in Vienna, he completed his studies under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender at the local academy. He spent one year in Dusseldorf in 1857 and became a member of the artist’s association ‘Malkasten’. His students were, for instance, Ferdinand Andri, Wilhelm Bernatzik and Heinrich Tomec. He preferred watercolored ink drawings, but also produced oil, tempera and pastel paintings. Examples of his artistic output can be found at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
