      Est: €16,000 - €20,000

CertificateDr. H. Herbst, Vienna 1971.Josse Lieferinxe was active in Avignon and Marseille between 1493 and 1505, where he was known as a "picardish" painter, which betrays his Flemish origins. Along with Barthélemy d´Eyck and Enguerrand Quarton, Lieferinxe was one of the last artists of the Avignon school. Before his identification by the art historian Charles Sterling (1901-1991), Lieferinxe was known as the "Master of Saint Sebastian". This former name originated from records that he and Bernardino Sismondi of Piemont were commissioned by the Brotherhood of Saint-Sebastien de Notre-Dame des Accoules in Marseille to paint an altarpiece depicting the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian in 1497. It is the idiosyncratic mix of Flemish and Italian elements that connects this Virgin and Child to the "picardish" painter, especially the combination of the Southern figure with an ornamental background reminiscent of Flemish leather wall coverings, which can be found in other works by this artist.
