GALANTE SZENE Öl auf Holz. Parkettiert. 39 x 31,5 cm. Links unten signiert „Jos. Lies.“ und datiert „1843.“ In dekorativem Rahmen. In herbstlicher Waldlandschaft hat sich, unterhalb eines Baumes, ein junges verliebtes Paar im Gras niedergelassen. Sie in einem prachtvollen Kleid mit geschnürtem Mieder und weitem Dekolleté, er halb im Gras liegend mit roter Jacke und brauner Hose. Sein Blick ist ganz auf sie gerichtet und er hält ihr dabei mit seiner Rechten die Hand. Sie hat ein zartes weiches Gesicht, leicht gerötete Wangen und schaut schüchtern mit ihren Augen nach unten, dabei hat sie die feinen Finger ihrer linken Hand verlegen an ihre Wange gelegt. Im Hintergrund, rechts des verliebten Paares, ist ein kleines Gebäude mit weit überdachter Veranda zu sehen, unter dem sich zahlreiche, schemenhaft erkennbare Figuren befinden. Einfühlsame Malerei des Künstlers, dabei besonders die prachtvolle Stofflichkeit der Kleidung und die liebevolle Zuneigung der beiden in den Vordergrund gestellt. (1251342) (18)

C. 1858 13 x 19 cm, laid paper, unsigned, with ms. notes relating to colours, etc. Stuck by edges and attributed to Lies on passe-partout. Two of these watercolours are preparatory works for "Les maux de la guerre" [The evils of war] (oil on wood, 87,5x 150 cm; Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, inv. 2666): the red-haired rider turning to left (right side of the painting) and the soldier guiding the oxen (left side). The other subjects are: man on the porch of his house, architecture studies, historic scene with a man standing in front of another one sitting from behind. Studies of faces in graphite pencil, on the verso of 1 sheet. The Belgian Romantic painter, draughtsman and engraver Lies (Antwerp 1821-1865) worked in a wide range of genres including history painting, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits, etc., and enjoyed a European-wide reputation during his lifetime. Joined, same artist: Young woman seated. Drawing, black stone, 22,5 x 14,5 cm, vellum paper, unsigned. Stuck by upper edge under passe-partout. (4 sheets)

Idyll in the park, oil on wood, 46 x 54 cm, signed and dated lower right: Joseph Lies. 1850. Provenance: - Swiss private collection. From 1834 to 1842 Joseph Lies attended courses at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, a key figure in the Belgian Romantic-Historical School of Painting. Little by little, Lies received official recognition for his work. In 1851 he received the gold medal in the exhibition in Brussels for his interrogation of Jeanne d'Arc. In 1853 he again received the gold medal in Brussels. In 1858 he was appointed Knight of the Leopold Order. In 1860 he became a teacher at the Antwerp Academy. On January 5, 1865 Lies died in his hometown. Idylle im Park, Öl auf Holz, 46 x 54 cm, signiert und datiert unten rechts: Joseph Lies. 1850. Provenienz: - Privatbesitz Schweiz Von 1834 bis 1842 besuchte Joseph Lies Kurse an der Akademie der Schönen Künste in Antwerpen. Einer seiner Lehrer an der Akademie war Nicaise de Keyser, eine Schlüsselfigur in der Belgischen Romantisch-historischen Schule der Malerei. Nach und nach erhielt Lies offizielle Anerkennung für seine Arbeit. Im Jahr 1851 erhielt er die Goldmedaille in der Ausstellung in Brüssel für seine Vernehmung von Jeanne dArc. 1853 erhielt er erneut die Goldmedaille in Brüssel. 1858 wurde er zum Ritter des Leopoldordens ernannt. 1860 wurde er Lehrer an der Antwerpener Akademie. Am 5. Januar 1865 starb Lies in seiner Heimatstadt.
