Biography

I am a professor, writer, and visual artist. I currently teach in the Illlustration department at the Rhode Island School of Design. I am a Partner in ART PROF, a free, online educational platform for visual arts that I created with Thomas Lerra. Art Prof has been featured in Two Coats of Paint and KPCC.

I wrote Ask the Art Prof, an advice column for visual artists which was featured in the Huffington Post for three years. In the past I have taught in RISD Foundation Studies, the RISD Printmaking department, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, at Wellesley College, and at the Lesley University College of Art and Design. You can view images of my students' work here. For four years I was the Director of the Jewett Gallery.

My studio practice uses various techniques of drawing, printmaking, and sculpture as means towards exploring the extremes of human emotion, using the human figure and face as a vehicle for expression. I have exhibited my work at the International Print Center New York, Bromfield Gallery, the Danforth Museum of Art, the Currier Museum of Art, the RISD Museum of Art, and the Davis Museum and Cultural Center. I have received artist grants from the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation and the Puffin Foundation. I am currently working on Scars that Speak, a series of graphite drawings inspired by the 2016 presidential election.
