Born in Malaysia in 1948, Jerry Liew is an architect and painter. He studied at the New South Wales Institute of Technology. Liew worked with the New Dance Theatre in the mid- 1970s and won the 'Sydney Morning Herald' Art Scholarship in 1981. He has exhibited in Sydney since 1972 and his work is represented in institutional and private collections in Australia and overseas

Most of the works in this exhibition are images inspired by the power station in White Bay.
The paintings are evolved from relics of Sydney Harbour. Once mighty establishments of industrial activities. They are now silent and still. Cranes of Cockatoo Island swivel in geometric abstraction, whilst the power station in White Bay moulders and smoulders in toxic decay. The chimneys still reaching for the sky. Maritime flotsam drifts in their reveries, licked by salt, stained with rain.

The works recognises the influence of modernity. A search of alternative ways of investigating this artistic inheritance, which combines abstract principles with narrative structures.
Here reductive visual language takes on unexpected referential association and spatial ambiguity.
Drawing is a crucial component of the process and articulates most of the visual information.
A balance between the measured and spontaneity forges new connection with the fundamental components of picture making to renew its visual and emotional dynamics.
