In it, the author describes the career of a monk, Ekkehard, who, confused by a love affair, turns away from monastic life and eventually becomes a writer. The sitter, presumably the Duchess Hadwig of Swabia, is sitting on a wall projection with a sad expression. Her head resting in her right hand, she holds a scroll in her left.
