Featured in a number of landmark exhibitions devoted to African art, including the international touring African Remix (2004), and African Art Now: Masterpieces from the Jean Pigozzi Collection (Museum of Fine Art, Houston 2005), Lilanga became the foremost Tanzinian artist from his generation and was hailed as the leading African artist by the influential art collector Jean Pigozzi. Initially, he worked in the Makonde artistic tradition of carving wooden sculptures. However after having been exposed to the work of other artists at the cultural centre Nyumba ya Sanaa (House of Art), he transformed his typical sculptural forms into two-dimensional art works such as paintings, etchings or panels. Developing his own style out of the Shetani (devils) figures of the modern Makonde sculptures, his paintings are characterised by their colourful irony, reflecting everyday life in Tanzania. The artist is the grandfather to Hendrick Lilanga (see lots 1 and 2).

DANCING FIGURES signed in English Lilanga lower right oil on cut metal image:123 x 124.5cm; 48 1/2 x 49in Provenance: Private Collection, London George Lilanga was a Tanzanian painter and sculptor, active from the late 1970s and until the early 21st century. He belonged to the Makonde people and lived most of his life in Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania. Alongside other African contemporary artists, his work was exhibited in international art shows, including Africa Remix 2004 or African Art Now in 2005. Through these exhibitions and the ensuing interest of art critics and collectors of contemporary African art, Lilanga became the internationally most renowned Tanzanian artist. Initially, he worked in the Makonde artistic tradition of carving wooden sculptures. After having been exposed to the work of other artists at the cultural centre Nyumba ya Sanaa (House of Art), he transformed his typical sculptural forms into two-dimensional art works such as paintings (as in the present work), etchings or panels. Developing his own style out of the Shetani (devils) figures of the modern Makonde sculptures, his paintings are characterised by their colourful irony, reflecting everyday life in Tanzania.

GEORGE LILANGA (Tanzania, 1934 - 2005). "Hawani Malafiki Wapenda Nho". Acrylic on táblex. Signed in the lower right corner. Titled on the back. Measurements: 61 x 61 cm. One of the most famous African artists of the 20th century, George Lilanga was born in the village of Kikwetu, in the south of Tanzania. Like most of the young Makonde, he learned to carve wood in the tradition of his village. He first showed his works to Europeans working in the refugee camp during the Mozambique war of independence and, following their advice, in 1970 he decided to move to Dar es Salaam, the most populous city in Tanzania, where there were more opportunities to sell his sculptures. During these years the artist came into contact with the artistic circles of the Tingatinga school and in 1972, after more than ten years devoted exclusively to wood carving, he decided to focus his career on painting. Only two years later, in 1974, the National Museum of Dar es Salaam presented some of his works. In 1977 he left Africa for the first time and travelled to New York, where he held an exhibition at the Marycoll Ossing Center. He stayed for a short time in Manhattan, selling prints of his work on the street. The following year he took part in a group exhibition of African artists held in Washington D.C., where of the two hundred and eighty works on display, about one hundred were his. Lilanga's work was considered a major influence on the young American graffiti artists of the time (Keith Haring stated in an interview that his language was influenced by Lilanga's work). At this time he began a long series of exhibitions around the world, achieving increasing success in Africa as well as in Europe, the United States, India and Japan. From the 1980s onwards Lilanga devoted himself almost exclusively to painting, depicting on panels made of cheap materials figures and scenes featuring "shetani", spirits from East African mythology who appear as distorted figures of men, women or animals. In the late 1990s his health problems became more complicated, suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, and he even lost a leg to gangrene. Lilanga died in June 2005 in Dar es Salaam, in his home workshop in the Mbagala neighbourhood.

George Lilanga is one of Tanzania’s best-known artists internationally. He fused influences from traditional Makonde carving with surreal, modern observations to create his much celebrated, idiosyncratic sculptures and paintings. Lilanga began training as a sculptor in 1961, making wood carvings in the traditional Makonde form. He moved to Dar es Salaam in 1970, where he encountered the Tingatinga School, which had a profound effect on his work. In 1979 he participated in a group exhibition of African artists in Washington DC, where the artist Keith Haring saw Lilanga’s paintings and later acknowledged the significant impact this encounter had made on his own work. Today Lilanga’s work is widely collected, featuring in many important private and institutional collections of African art. This painting was bought by the current owner from the artist and there is an accompanying photograph of Lilanga in front of his painting. The painting has been cleaned by there is some craquelure on the surface of the work.
