A full length portrait of the 1st Lord Bloomfield, 1768-1846Oil on canvas1st Baron Bloomfield (1768-1846) was educated at The Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. He became a Second Lieutenant in The Royal Artillery in 1781. Broomfield commanded a battery of artillery at Vinegar Hill during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 and ‘received a handsome sword in acknowledgement of his services.’ He served in Newfoundland and Gibraltar. In 1806 he was appointed Gentleman in Waiting to King George IV. After, he was promoted to Chief Equerry and Keeper of The Privy Purse. He was Knighted in 1815 and became a Knight Grand Cross of The Order of The Bath in 1822. In 1823 he was created a baron in the Irish Peerage. He became Colonel Commandant of The Royal Artillery in 1824 and was made Commanding Officer in 1826. He returned to Ireland to manage the estate at Loughton. He died in 1846 and is buried in the family mausoleum at Borrisnafarney Parish Church. Three portraits of Benjamin Bloomfield by John Lilly are recorded. A full length portrait is at The Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. This was presented to the Academy by John, 2nd Lord Bloomfield in 1871. A smaller version was in the family collection at Redwood and the present picture. This painting was discovered by Martin Colnaghi (1821-1908) in a shop in London. Colnaghi was one of the foremost dealers in old master paintings in the nineteenth-century. He presented the work to the 2nd Lord Bloomfield in the 1850s. Martin Colnaghi was afterwards employed by Lord Bloomfield to catalogue and conserve the paintings at Loughton.
