        Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) Grey Squirrel / Woodpecker

        Est: $500 - $1,000

Ken Lilly (British, 1929 - 1996) "Grey Squirrel and Great Spotted Woodpecker" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is distributed over an immense range covering almost the entire Palearctic from Britain in the west to Japan in the east and reaching North Africa and the Canary Islands in the south-west. The Great Spotted has a varied diet changing with the seasons. During spring and summer it feeds largely on insects, especially ants and the larvae of wood-boring beetles. Holes may be chiselled up to four inches deep. But in autumn and winter the birds switch to a variety of fruits, seeds and nuts. Although feeding their own young largely on insects and spiders, Great Spotted Woodpeckers are notorious for taking the eggs and young of other hole-nesting birds (especially tits and house martins). Gray squirrels are medium sized arboreal, or tree squirrels. Their back is grizzled dark to pale gray and may be tinted with reddish coloration on their hips, feet and head. The tail is white to pale gray and as is their stomach. In the north, both their ears and soles of the feet grow heavy fur during winter. Generally, there is no difference between males and females with respect to size or coloration. Squirrels feed heavily on nuts, flowers, and buds of oak species, and walnut, hickory and pecan. Other food items include the fruits, seeds, buds or flowers of certain trees. Fungi are also consumed when readily available in summer, as are cultivated crops in winter. Animal food items include bones, bird eggs, nestlings, and frogs. Image Size: 13.5 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 16 in. Unframed. (B08147)

        Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) "Hare"

        Est: $400 - $800

Ken Lilly (British, 1929 - 1996) "Hare" Initialed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Panel for the U.S.S.R. Wildlife issue of 1989. Members of the leporidae family, hares are animals with roots reaching back into the Paleocene era. This familiar long-eared creature is even mentioned in folklore and mythology, for the Germanic earth goddess Ostara favored hares above all other animals. Contrary to some popular thought, hares are not forest or deep woodland creatures. They commonly occur in open terrain and around cultivated fields which yield year-round sustenance for the population. Hares avoid high elevations and cold, moist ground, preferring warm, dry habitats with rich loamy ground cvoerings. These animals are non-migratory and usually live their lives within a mile or two of their birthplace. Hares are born fully furred and are nursed for two to three weeks thereafter. After weaning, the young hares eat adult fare. Wild hares are strictly herbivorous, and their diet includes green plants, twigs, bark, shrubs and weed seeds. In cultivated areas, hares frequently help themselves to produce such as cabbage, parsley and winter grains. Their eyesight is relatively poor; they can usually detect movement, but little else. Hares depend upon their sharpest senses -- hearing and smell -- to alert them to danger and often stand on their powerful hind legs to test their surroundings. Image Size: 13.75 x 11 in. Overall Size: 18 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B12111)

      • Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) "European Wild Cat"
        Jul. 05, 2020

Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) "European Wild Cat"

        Est: $350 - $700

Ken Lilly (British, 1929 - 1996) "European Wild Cat" Initialed lower middle. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain 31p Species at Risk; Wild Cat stamp issued May 20, 1986. The rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands is one of the last strongholds for one of the world's rarest breeds of cats -- the European Wild Cat. Slightly larger than a domestic cat, this beautiful creature has sandy color with gray stripes marking its back and flanks, and dark rings circling its tail. Suspicious of man and populated areas, the Wild Cat dwells in forests where it can conceal itself in deep shadows and undergrowth. During daylight hours, the Wild Cat usually stays under cover. However, if the day is warm, it may enjoy sunning itself on a tree stump or rock. With the coming of twilight, the Wild Cat will begin to prowl meadows, clover fields and the forest's edge in search of its prey of small rodents. A solitary hunter, the Wild Cat marks its territory as its own by clawing at the base of trees and shrubs. Indeed, the Wild Cat will only seek the company of other Cats during the mating season. In the spring, females give birth to two to four kittens. During their first three months of life, the mother Wild Cat will teach her young how to stalk prey and even catch fish before sending them away to fend for themselves. Image Size: 13.5 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 16 in. Unframed. (B10224)

      • Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) Montagu's Harrier Bird
        Jul. 05, 2020

        Ken Lilly (1929 - 1996) Montagu's Harrier Bird

        Est: $350 - $700

Ken Lilly (British, 1929 - 1996) "Montagu's Harrier Bird" Initialed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain block of four Species at Risk stamps issued May 20, 1986. Soaring low over the English moorlands, the Montagu's Harrier scans the landscape for its prey. This strikingly beautiful bird of prey is able to glide over the countryside for long distances with only an occasional beat or two of its long narrow wings. A summer visitor to the British Isles, the Montagu's Harrier comes to nest and raise its young. However, in recent years there has been a drastic decline in its numbers. This is due to destruction of the birds' habitat, persecution by trophy hunters and the use of pesticides. Indeed, only two pairs of Montagu's Harriers are known to have bred in the British Isles in recent years. Image Size: 13.5 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 16 x 16 in. Unframed. (B10225)
