  • François Linke, (1855-1946), French Renaissance Style Walnut Library
    Mar. 27, 2025

François Linke, (1855-1946), French Renaissance Style Walnut Library

    Est: $20,000 - $40,000

François Linke, (1855-1946), French Renaissance Style Walnut Library Paris, circa 1912-1927. the top with diamond shaped parquetry, above a frieze, on trestle supports carved and inlaid as rounded arches, with winged dragon monopodia, joined by a platform stretcher, raised on paw feet. Height 31 in. (78.74 cm.); Width 49 in. (124.46 cm.); Depth 32 in. (81.28 cm.) Provenance: Jean Bieder, the shop Forman for Francois Linke in the 1920's, who in 1946 took over Linkes business. Thence through Various Private Collections Literature: C. Payne, Francois Linke, p.253, pl 267, for an illustration of a variant of the present model. D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le Mobilier Francois du XIX Siecle, pp.435-444C. Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, pp. 39-40 Cf. The present lot has no counterpart in the Linke Archive, however, there are two similiar, each with a marble top. Number 845 was made in 1927 for the King of Egypt. Another variation, number 2403, is one of the earliest examples of Linke making furniture in a Renaissance revival manner, a 'grande table noyer sculpte' made for Antonio Devoto in Bueno Aires in 1912. However, in both instances, these two tables were supplied with a marble top, unlike the present lot. This Renaissance style table is carved walnut and similar to an undated project in the Linke archive for the Maharaja of Baroda. In keeping with Linkes practice in the latter stages of his long career, he branched out into styles of furniture not traditionally associated with his oeuvre. The carved decoration is influenced by designers such as Hughes Sambin, whose influential book Oeuvres de la Diversite des Termes, was published in 1572. It is interesting to see the present lot in context with a table exhibited by Emile Galle at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. Although better known for their interpretation of the Art Nouveau Style, both Galle and Marjorelle first exhibited in 1889 with more traditional designs. One of Galle's masterpieces, made for the Musee de l'Ecole de Nancy, is a table 'Le Rhin', similar in form to the present lot in an interpretation of the Renaissance style. A 16th century table, also in walnut, Collection Bonnaffe, Les Art du Bois, J. Rouam, editeur, Paris, c. 1890, p. 69, and another, Collection Spitzer, p. 60.

    Mar. 27, 2025

Francois Linke (1855-1946), 19th-Century Grand Piano

    Est: $60,000 - $90,000

François Linke (1855–1946) A Magnificent Late 19th-Century Louis XV-Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Kingwood Piano Signed François Linke, Stamped Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener, Movement by Erard A masterpiece of 19th-century craftsmanship, this exceptional Louis XV-style grand piano is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between François Linke and Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener, with a precision-engineered movement by the esteemed Parisian firm Erard. The elegantly proportioned quarter-veneered case is adorned with intricately inlaid cartouche panels, centering delicate bouquets of blossoms and cattails. The hinged lid, framed by finely cast ribbon-tied reeded borders, opens to reveal a luxurious satinwood-veneered interior, inscribed Par Brevet d'Invention / Seb. & Pre Erard / 13 & 21 rue du Mail Paris and signed Erard/Paris above the keyboard. The case features gracefully scalloped sides and a striking lyre-form pedal support, all raised on six cabriole legs, each adorned with elaborate pierced foliate mounts and terminating in finely sculpted lion paw and bun feet. Linke’s signature is prominently displayed on the upper right foliate mount, further affirming the significance of this instrument. Provenance & Historical ContextFurther inspection has revealed that the interior of certain gilt-bronze mounts bear the initials ZJ, the distinctive mark of Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener. A nearly identical piano—bearing the same configuration of Linke’s signature alongside Zwiener’s stamp—was offered at Christie’s London (October 1999, Lot 182). It has been speculated that Erard supplied the movement to Zwiener, who began the casting work but transferred completion to Linke upon relocating to Berlin in 1898. Alternatively, the piano may have been entirely crafted by Zwiener and later retailed by Linke, a common practice among the foremost ébénistes of the period. This piano stands as a testament to the exceptional artistry and technical brilliance of Linke, Zwiener, and Erard—three of the most celebrated names in 19th-century decorative arts. Catalogue note: Further inspection has revealed that the interior of some of the bronze mounts are impressed with the initials 'ZJ', the mark of Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener. A nearly identical piano with the same configuration of Linke's signature and Zwiener's initials was sold at Christie's London (October 1999, lot 182), with the speculation that movement was provided by Erard to Zwiener, who then began the casting work on the piano but passed it off to Linke to complete when Zwiener moved to Berlin in 1898. Another possibility is that the piano was completely made by Zwiener but retailed by Linke.
