The present oil painting documents the views of the Sicilian town of Murriali, where the artist may have passed, when travelling through Italy. The work depicts the access road nestled at the bottom of the Monte Caputo and leading straight towards the beautiful city in the distance. Interestingly, connoisseurs will immediately discover the cathedral in the center of the site. The scenery is animated by rich figural staffage that captivates through variety and the elaborate execution. The painting is signed, inscribed and dated lower right 'P. Linke, Monreale 91'. The canvas is laid down on cardboard; verso, it is fitted with a label inscribed with information about the artist, the work and the date '1892'. The painting is in good condition, as it only shows a number of tiny spots among the clouds in the sky. The frame is also well preserved and measures 39.3 x 52.2 cm. The size of the canvas is 32 x 46 cm. Paul Rudolph Linke (1844-1917) Paul Rudolph Linke was born in Breslau and became active as a portrait, landscape and genre painter. He studied at the art academy in Berlin and gained great sources of inspiration during his extensive travels through Italy and North Africa. Besides, Paul Linke was also commissioned as fresco artist and executed a number of wall paintings in castles, churches and monasteries.
