MADONNA IN ANBETUNG DES JESUSKINDES MIT DEM JUNGEN HEILIGEN JOHANNES UND HEILIGEN JOSEPH IM HINTERGRUND, UM 1470 Öl auf gebogenem Holz. 69 x 42 cm. (1031571) (11) Florentine master from the circle of Filippo Lippi 1406 Florence - 1469 Spoleto The Virgin and Christ Child with the young Saint John the Baptist, ca. 1470 Oil on panel, with affixed narrow gilt edging. 69 x 42 cm. Internal frame dimensions: 72 x 45 cm. Set in a rectangular frame with red velvet lining. The painting’s high quality and the depiction of the hair and earthy flesh tones in particular both point towards Lippi and his circle and to works by Sandro Botticelli (ca. 1445 - 1510). Notes: The object is registered at the photographic library of the Fondazione Federico Zeri, no 14927.

  • FRA FILIPPO LIPPI, THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD
    Nov. 16, 2013

FRA FILIPPO LIPPI, THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD

    Est: €400,000 - €500,000

FRA FILIPPO LIPPI, THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD Berenson, Valentiner, Gronau and lastly Jeffrey Ruda in his catalogue raisonné have all confirmed this piece as an original work of Filippo Lippi. Pudelko and Pittaluga however suppose it to be a workshop piece. According to Ruda, the beauty of the figural group, of which a 15th century copy is known to exist (Pittaluga, op. cit., p. 214), speaks for Lippi's authorship. The doubts as to the status of this work are probably grounded in its lesser artistic impact when compared to other, more well preserved pieces by this artist. Ruda assumes that the piece must once have been damaged. Two 20th century restorations are recorded - the first from 1934/35 and the second from 1970, carried out by Marco Grassi (J. Ruda op. cit.). The experts all agree that the piece can be dated to the 1450s. As one of the greatest and most prolific Florentine painters of the 15th century, Filippo Lippi was able to gather a multitude of pupils and assistants around him to help carry out his commissions. Some of them are even known by name, such as his son Filippino or Fra Diamante.
