Paper slightly toned. There is an area where paper is not completely laid down and there is some undulation to the surface, with space between the sheet and support board.     Simon Lissim (Ukrainian, 1900–1981), a mixed media on board painting titled "Ascent to Heaven," 1959. Signed and dated "Simon Lissim 59" (lower right). Framed. Bears a Skinner auction house paper labels on the backside. Provenance: Skinner, Boston, 20.05.2005, lot 458 Borodulin Collection. Note: Simon Lissim is known for theatre set design, decorative art, and china design. Simon Lissim was born in Kiev, Ukraine at the turn of the 19th century. He studied at the art school of A.S. Monko as of 1917. In 1919, Lissim emigrated, and as of 1920, he was studying at the art school of Reimann in London and living in Wiesbaden and London. Simon Lissim lived in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s and was closely associated with Diaghilev, Bakst, Benois, and many others. In Paris, he studied at the French National School of Decorative Arts, and after he worked at the famous Theatre de L’Oeuvre in Paris. His set design for that theatre’s 1924 production of Hamlet won Lissim, a Silver Medal from the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. He also designed for Lenox and Royal Copenhagen. Simon moved to the United States in 1941.

Offered is a interesting work of five pieces two theater/ costume illustration divide by three panels demonstrating his incredible command of illustrated floral design in watercolor and gouache. Lissim's works are on permanent display in most major museums worldwide but here is an opportunity to acquire a piece far more modestly priced. Framed boldly in the late 1960s in New York City there appears to be his name in Cyrillic and also his date of birth and death written as a reference later. Framed to 12 x 19" under glass, the three panels are vivid and explode in colors, the two costumed sketches are as originally illustrated. As framed and matted, the entire work has great eye appeal. EXHIBITED: "The World of Simon Lissim: 90 Designs for the Theatre," a traveling exhibition organized and circulated by the International Exhibitions Foundation, Washington, D.C., 1979. LITERATURE: "The World of Simon Lissim: 90 Designs for the Theatre" (exhibition catalog), Washington, D.C., 1979. This image is a 1976 variation by the artist of his original stage design for the play at the Theatre de l'Atelier, Paris, 1931. Simon Lissim was born in Kiev, Ukraine at the turn of the century. He studied at the art school of A.S. Monko as of 1917. In 1919 Lissim emigrated and as of 1920 he was studying at the art school of Reimann in Berlin and living in Wiesbaden and London. From the end of 1921 to 1940, Lissim was living and working in Paris. In 1922 he was studying at the French National School of Decorative Arts, and by 1923 Lissim was working at the famous Théâtre de L'Oeuvre in Paris. His set design for that theatre's 1924 production of Hamlet won Lissim a Silver Medal from the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris. In Europe, Lissim worked with set and costume designs for theatre and opera in Paris and Barcelona, including Rimsky-Korsakov and Borodin productions. Lissim emigrated to the United States in 1940. From 1942 on he was the Director of Artistic Studies at the New York Public Library, where amongst other accomplishments he established the childrens' art education program. Both before and after his emigration to the United States, Lissim exhibited widely in Europe and America. Exhibitions of his work took place at the at the Parisian Salons (d'Automne, des Artistes Décorateurs, etc.), in England (Royal Society of Arts), and solo exhibitions in Paris (Galerie Charpentier - 1927, 1931, 1935), and New York (1936, 1937, 1944, 1951, 1953, 1966). As of 1956 he was Chairman of the National Selecting Committee for the Fulbright Awards in Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts. He taught widely in New York - in addition to the New York Public Library, Lissim was an Associate Professor and then Professor teaching at City College in New York from 1944 onwards. A retrospective of Lissim's works, The World of Simon Lissim, was held in the United States as a traveling exhibition from 1979-80 Lissim's design activies were varied and extended to porcelain. He worked extensively with Sèvres and Limoges, and his designs were also used for Lenox and Royal Copenhagen. He died in Florida in 1981. His works can be found in major museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Albertina in Vienna, the Musée National du Jeu de Paume and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, amongst others.
