Edward Lloyd (British, 1818-1901) A Shropshire Squire going hunting, wearing a nosegay of flowers, riding a grey hunter, his groom with a chestnut second horse and sandwich box on his back, and a black retriever alongside signed lower right "Lloyd, Edward / Salop / 9 May 1868" oil on canvas h:63 w:75 cm Provenance: From a Lincolnshire country house Other Notes: Edward Lloyd was a sporting painter from Ellesmere who specialised in animal portraiture, particularly horses, as well as sheep and cattle. He exhibited 'Shropshire Down Sheep' at the Royal Academy in 1861, whilst he lived at Willow Street, Ellesmere, and his work was also held at country estates in Wales and Shropshire, including at Attingham Park. His picture of 'Hunters at Wynnstay' is a particularly good example, as is the work entitled 'Welsh Stallion'. Edward Lloyd was trained as an artist by Mr Agnew of Manchester and subsequently excelled as an equine artist. The Marquis of Hastings, nicknamed 'Champagne Charlie', once wagered that he could produce a finer equine artist than Landseer. Edward Lloyd and Sir Edwin Landseer both painted a portrait of the same horse, their signatures were masked and a panel of experts unanimously agreed that Edward Lloyd's painting was immeasurably superior.
