        Scotland.- Loch (James) An Account of the Improvements on the Estates of the Marquess of Stafford, in...Stafford and Salop, and on the estate of Sutherland, first edition, lacking half-title, with folding engraved map hand-coloured in outline, 39 plates and plans, some folding, a few hand-coloured, light offsetting, later polished tan calf, spine gilt, a little spotted, [Goldsmiths 22807; Kress C.571; Perkins 1028], 1820 § [Kames (Henry Home, Lord)] Progress of Flax-Husbandry in Scotland, first edition, contemporary manuscript note regarding author on title, modern cloth, ex-Rothemsted Agricultural library copy but unstamped, [Kress 6351, erroneously calling for a plan], Edinburgh, Sands, Murray, and Cochran, 1766 § Considerations on the System of the Laws in Scotland relative to Salt, first edition, modern cloth, [Goldsmiths' 16055; Kress B.2681], Edinburgh, for J.Simpson, 1794; and 2 others relating to Scotland, 8vo (5) ⁂ The author of the first was the state commissioner for the Marquess of Stafford and on his behalf carried out the notorious highland clearances in Sutherland, when crofters were evicted from the land for the development of sheep-farming, causing appalling hardship, bitter resentment, and emigration for many. The second is rare with ESTC recording only 5 UK copies in 4 locations (BL, National Library of Scotland 2 copies, Oxford, and this copy previously at Rothamsted), plus 2 copies in the Baker Library at Harvard. The third is also rare with 2 copies in the UK (National Library of Scotland and Senate House) and copies at Columbia and Harvard in America.
