    mixed media collage on paper, signed and dated 1997 at lower right, retaining several labels to the verso, mounted and framed under glass. Image 9.25 x 12 in.; DOA 21.5 x 21 in. Born in Berlin, Edith London and her husband, Fritz London, left Germany in 1933. She studied art for several years with the well known French painters Marcel Gromaire and Andre Lhote. In 1939, she and her husband were settled in Durham, NC, where he had accepted a teaching position at Duke University. She remained in Durham until her death in 1997. Gallery C, Raleigh, NC Exhibited: Scent of the Pine, You Know How I Feel: North Carolina Art from the Jonathan P. Alcott Collection, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Farmville, Virginia, June 20 - October 18, 2014 (illustrated in the accompanying catalogue). Provenance: Whyte's, 9 December 2012, lot 354; Whence purchased by the present owner Dimensions of Abstract Composition, 1966 10.25 by 6ins. Berlin born Edith London is celebrated for her abstract paintings and work in collage with examples of her work in the collection of North Carolina Museum of Art, The Cameron Museum of Art, Wilmington, NC, NC State University, Duke University, and the National Humanities Center. London studied art first in her native Germany and then at the British Academy in Rome. In 1933 she relocated to Oxford with her husband and later studied at the Académie André L'Hote in Paris. After her husband's passing she moved to the United States in 1954 where she taught at Drake University, North Carolina until 1969, returning as a visiting professor in 1973.
