Francesco Londonio (Milano 1723 - 1783) cerchia di Scena pastorale Tempera su carta 32 x 53 cm Fu allievo di Ferdinando Porta e Giovanni Battista Sassi da cui apprese un fare pittorico fresco e decorativo. In seguito fu a Roma e Napoli dove probabilmente, visti gli sviluppi della sua arte, amò le opere bucoliche che ritraevano pastori e animali dipinte da Rosa da Tivoli e Domenico Brandi, tradotte anche in numerose incisioni da egli stesso eseguite. Grazie alla sua ottima tecnica e alla sua indole naturalista fu anche abile ritrattista per la nomenclatura borghese e nobiliare milanese. Dopo il successo delle sue figure del presepe per gli apparati natalizi della Chiesa di San Marco a Milano, l'imperatrice Maria Teresa d'Austria, nel 1778, gli affidò il ruolo di scenografo del neonato Teatro alla Scala. Villa Regina Margherita, Milano 2011, p. 70, fig. 39 (illustrata solo la prima scena e come Francesco Londonio) Allievo a Milano di Ferdinando Porta, Londonio fu autore di raffinate scene pastorali ispirate dall'arte del Castiglione e dei maestri fiamminghi. Predilesse per lo più opere di piccolo formato, descrivendo pastori e contadini con una pasta pittorica vigorosa. Il suo talento gli permette di essere uno dei più apprezzati pittori della realtà attivi in Lombardia tra Arcadia e Illuminismo. Tuttavia, viene spesso considerato un artista minore o d'esclusivo interesse antiquario (Coppa 1989): non è un caso che le poche mostre a lui dedicate siano state promosse da gallerie private (Francesco Londonio, catalogo della mostra a cura di M. Bona Castellotti e C. Geddo, Galleria Piva & C., Milano 1998, Francesco Londonio (1723-1783), la collezione di stampe del conte C. d. P., catalogo della mostra a cura di L. e M. Salamon, Milano 1999). I dipinti in esame, quindi, rappresentano una peculiare aggiunta al catalogo dell'artista, a riprova della sua propensione a cogliere brani pittorici dal vero, tratti dagli esempi dell'arte nordica e coniugati alle tematiche già diffuse da Monsù Bernardo, Giacomo Francesco Cipper, Giacomo Ceruti e alle idee pre-illuministe del Muratori, dell'Arcadia letteraria e alla 'naturale propensione' nei confronti delle classi popolari (Cfr. F. Porzio, Pitture ridicole. Scene di genere e cultura popolare, Milano 2008, pp. 117-141). Si deve infine evidenziare che i caratteri di stile suggeriscono una datazione precoce. (Milano, 1723 - 1783) Studio di animali Matita e olio su carta, cm 22,5X29 Francesco Londonio è uno dei più apprezzati pittori della realtà attivo in Lombardia durante il XVIII secolo e il dipinto qui presentato è da considerare un'interessante aggiunta al catalogo. Si tratta di uno studio di animali dipinti con sentito naturalismo e capacità di mimesi che attesta il talento dell'artista a riprova della propensione a cogliere dal vero i brani delle sue tele, come si evince osservando le carte dipinte conservate presso la Pinacoteca di Brera, da considerare veri e propri 'appunti' di viaggio eseguiti dal pittore e fonte illustrativa inesauribile per la sua produzione. Un ulteriore raffronto con l'opera in esame è l'olio su carta custodito alla Pinacoteca Ambrosiana (Coppa, p. 111, n. 504) e proveniente dal lascito di Carlo Londonio, nipote dell'artista, del 1837. [^] Schlafende Hirtin mit Ziege und zwei Schafen. -- Schwarze und weiße Kreide auf braunem Papier. 28,9 x 37,7 cm. -- -- Francesco Londonio war als Maler, Stecher und Szenograph überwiegend im spätbarocken Mailand tätig. Dort genoss er auch seine erste Ausbildung in der Malkunst bei Ferdinando Porta und Giovanni Battista Sissi. Studienreisen führten ihn nach Rom und Neapel. Mit seinen rustikalen und pastoralen Landschaftsmotiven bediente Londonio ein gefragtes Genre, das besonders in Norditalien große Beliebtheit unter den wohlhabenden Auftraggebern genoss.
