Charles Long American, b. 1958 Abe Lincoln, 1992-95 Rubber over armature with single hair from Abraham Lincoln 56 x 25 x 25 (142.24 x 63.5 x 63.5 cm) Sculptor Charles Long (twice awarded the Pollock-Krasner grant) creates biomorphic, and at times blob-like, abstract sculptures. He chooses, however, to challenge the textbook definition of abstraction: his sculptures are not extractions or adaptations of existing forms, but rather explorations into the self and nature. At first glance, "Abe Lincoln," appears to be a simple form, created as a vessel to showcase a single hair from the 16th President. That withstanding, in an interview for Bomb Magazine (Spring 2012), Long explains "...that's a minimal surface. It's a sphere pulled to a point, and when it comes to that final point, that's where Abraham Lincoln's hair comes out of it. For me, the minimal surface is this ultrageneralized form, exhibiting a minimum of surface difference, but at this point of extension, it takes on a radical subjectivity as you understand this line is also a person, in this case Lincoln, a DNA structure, and all the history around him." (26.7 x 32.4 cm)  all signed with initials and numbered `PP II’ in pencil on the reverse and on the colophon (a printer’s proof, the edition was 15 plus 4 artist’s proofs), published by Muse X Editions, Los Angeles, all in very good condition, contained in original paper box with title label on the front.
