Long Stanley Long was born in Oakland, California, in 1892 and spent much of his youth on a ranch in Napa. By the time he was 15, he showed a talent both for breaking horses and drawing the life he saw around him on the ranch. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institution and the California College of Arts and Crafts. As a student in California, he won a scholarship to attend the Academie Julian in Paris. He served in both World Wars and became a successful illustrator and teacher. While he painted a wide variety of subjects as both artist and illustrator, his early life working on ranches remained one of his primary sources of inspirations. Adept at watercolor, Long created lasting images of cowboys, horses, and cattle in bright colors and fluid brushstrokes. His works, such as these watercolors show his great knowledge of his subject matter along with his skill at depicting scenes of action and adventure. Long lived most of his life in California and died in San Carlos at the age of 80.
