      (American, 1852-1924) signed l.l. In 1874 he went to France where he remained for eleven years. Here he studied at the Julian Academy and under Leon Bonnat.During his stay in France, Loomis exhibited at six Paris Salons. Several of his paintings were reproduced by the famous French firm of Goupil, including La Presentation du Pretendu (1879) and Christopher Sly Metamorphose en Grand Seigneur (1882). The latter is now in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. (A full-page illustration of this painting appears in The Gallery of Contemporary Art, Vol. II, p. 39, Gebbie & Co., 1884). While living in Paris, Loomis also exhibited (in 1879) at the Royal Academy a painting entitled Fourteenth Century Justice showing a poacher being man-handled before a child prince. During this period Loomis traveled and painted extensively in Italy, especially in Capri. This painting is believed to be the painting exhibited. This painting was exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. Chester Loomis (American, 1852 - 1924). From a Mamaroneck, NY home. Dimensions: 22" high x 33" wide. Condition: Small puncture to background at mid right with some old retouching. Small loss upper right. Otherwise good with some surface dirt.

      Oil on canvas portrait of an older woman in black dress seated on a wicker chair. Her right hand is at her cheek and chin and she gazes straight at the viewer. She wears a pearl necklace, gold and gemstone pin and ring.She is seen against a gray mottled background. Signed upper right and dated "1909". Housed in a partially gilt and painted white frame. Chester Loomis moved and set up a studio in Englewood, NJ after he spent his beginning years in France studying at the Julian Academy and working under Leon Bonnat. He worked in NJ until his death in 1924. His principle income was from portraits, murals and the design of Ecclesiastical stain glass windows. SIZE: 25" x 30". CONDITION: Very good. 9-99261
