ADOLF LOOS 1870 - 1933 - A TEA TABLE (ELEFANTENRÜSSEL TISCH)

The tea table, known as the Elefantenrüsseltisch (referring to the shape of the legs), was first presented in 1900 by Schmidt at the Winter Exhibition of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. Loos first used the design indoors in 1902 in the apartment of Dr. Hugo Haberfeld. The table can be considered one of the most iconic modernist designs ever. The elegant curves of the legs with their moulded arched edge with brass combined with mahogany wood matched the Viennese taste of the most demanding clientele. Loos also used this model in other interiors, including those of Friedmann, Weiss and Rosenfeld. Adolf Loos designed this model in various versions. The offered table is in a larger version with eight legs and a top with inset ceramic tiles with green glaze. In good preserved condition. Literature. Ottilingerová, Adolf Loos. Cover and upholstery presumably renewed. The dimensions are 91,5 x 57 x 57 cm. Adolf Loos (1870-1933) Adolf Loos was born in the Austrian town Brünn in 1870. He studied at the Technical University in Dresden and then traveled to the United States where he lived for a couple of years. In 1896 he settled in Vienna and worked as an architect and journalist. Loos propagated the use of precious materials and rejected the ornamental decorations in applied art and objects of utility. In 1908 he wrote his probably most famous pamphlet entitled ‘Ornament und Verbrechen’ (Ornament and Crime) in which he argues that the non-presence of ornaments testifies of high cultural development. Residenz, Salzburg / Wien 1994, p. 163, fig. 232 Dimensions: 71 x 107 x 51cm Good Condition Designs by Adolf Loos fetch up to €180.000 at international auctions This trolley was designed around 1902 by the Austrian architect and designer Adolf Loos for the apartment of Marie and Gustav Turnovsky. The frame is made of solid and veneered mahogany. The three spoke-wheels are made of nickel plated iron. Shelves and the removable tray with two handles are made of cut glass. Through the elegant swinging handle the trolley receives a classy look slightly reminiscent of a carriage. The trolley is 71 cm high and measures 107 x 51 cm. It is in good condition with some loss of veneer and few nicks. The nickel plating is slightly rubbed with minimal traces of rust. The body is conducted in oak and was covered with brown leather that is decorated with large brass nails. The chair is in very good original condition showing hardly any signs of wear. There are small scratches on the leather. The cover is c. 15 years old. The chair was part of the 'Werkbundsiedlung' Nr. 49- 52 in Vienna and is part of the interior decoration by Heinrich Kulka.
