CLAUDIO LORENZALE Y SUGRAÑES (Barcelona, 1816 - 1889). "Palatial scene". Oil on canvas. Signed with the artist's initials in the lower right-hand corner. Measurements: 70 x 100 cm; 94 x 124 cm (frame). This work shows the taste of the 19th century for the historical painting developed in great measure by the prominence that the artistic academies gave to the genre, not only for the thematic quality but also for the technique, since the historical compositions allowed to show figures in movement, as well as landscapes and architectures. Lorenzale achieved great mastery in this genre to which he contributed a unique and personal vision that can be appreciated in this painting of delicate and elegant figures. The piece is inspired by a past that is depicted in a bucolic manner with young people enjoying the arts and leisure in a profuse landscape. The clothing brings us closer to the Italian aesthetics of the early Renaissance in such a way that the image evokes to a large extent the plot of Boccaccio's The Decameron, a book that tells how a group of privileged young people fleeing the plague in the city of Florence gather on the outskirts to safeguard themselves, spending their time dedicated to the arts. A prominent Catalan painter and teacher of the 19th century, Claudio Lorenzale, a member of the Nazarenes, represented the medievalist romanticism movement that was at the origin of the recovery of the historical past in Catalonia, leading to the Catalan Renaixença. Born into an Italian family, Lorenzale trained in Murcia from 1828, and in 1830 he entered the Llotja School in Barcelona. There he was taught by Pelegrí Clavé, and in 1837 he won first prize in painting for his work "Jael and Sísara". That same year he moved to Rome with Pau Milà, through whom he came into contact with the Nazarene painter Friedrich Overbeck, who became his teacher. He continued his training at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, where he was also awarded a first prize for painting. During his stay in Italy Lorenzale travelled to various cities in the country, where he became acquainted at first hand with the great masters of the Renaissance. In 1844 he returned to Barcelona with his own artistic personality, a purist aesthetic inspired by medieval art and the teachings of Overbeck. He founded his own academy, which would acquire great renown, from which he defended the recovery of models prior to Raphael. His prestige as a teacher led to his appointment in 1851 as assistant professor of the higher studies in painting at La Llotja, a school of which he was later appointed director (1858-1885). Among his numerous pupils were prominent artists such as Mariano Fortuny, Antonio Caba and his son Ramiro Lorenzale. In fact, through his private classes and at La Llotja he influenced most of the Barcelona painters of the time. As a painter, he tackled the main themes typical of the Spanish school of the time, such as religious painting, history painting and portraiture, a genre in which he was particularly renowned. Lorenzale is currently represented in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the City Council and the University of Barcelona, among other public and private collections.
