Claude Lorrain Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Naval painter, Etcher, b. 1600 - d. 1682

(b Chamagne (Vosges), France, 1600; d Rome, 1682) French painter. Lorrain is one of the most enduringly admired and imitated landscape painters of the western tradition. His compositions have inspired artists as diverse as Turner and Vernet. He was patronized and later collected by the international elite- popes, cardinals, princes and kings- on a scale that was rivaled in his day only by Rubens and van Dyck. Working for most of his life in Rome, Lorrain eschewed the earlier, somewhat drier, landscape style of his master Agostino Tassi and other contemporaries such as the Fleming Paulus Bril and, under the influence of the Carracci school-- particularly Domenichino-- reinvented the idealized, Arcadian landscape. Using drawings taken from nature, in which he anticipated the painters of both the Barbizon and Impressionist schools, Lorrain was able to compose his landscapes with great naturalism, making revolutionary use of light and dark, form and space, to create idealized pictures which represented a nature that was more perfect than nature itself. Bislang konnte kein dazugehöriges Gemälde nachgewiesen werden, doch finden sich verschiedene Elemente in der Komposition "Coast View with a Battle on a Bridge" (Liber Veritatis 27, Roethlisberger 183) wieder. Kaum eine andere so umfassende Gruppe ähnlicher Blätter erlaubt einen vergleichbaren Einblick in Claudes Schaffensprozess, in dem eine kompositionelle Grundstruktur in mehreren Varianten durchgespielt wird. The sheet was published by Marcel Roethlisberger in a supplement to his catalogue raisonné of Claude's drawings. It belongs to a group of three other drawings (Roethlisberger 181 recto and verso and 182) that show a similar composition, although Roethlisberger leaves the sequence of their creation date open. No corresponding painting has yet been identified, but various elements can be found in the composition "Coast View with a Battle on a Bridge" (Liber Veritatis 27, Roethlisberger 183). Hardly any other such comprehensive group of similar sheets provides a comparable insight into Claude's creative process, in which a basic compositional structure is played out in several variations. (p. 340). The motif of the ship within the portal of a building itself another example of the placing of a Roman monument in a harbour setting, is first seen in a painting dated 1633 in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch.
