  • J. KLENGEL (*1751) after LORRAIN (*1600), The cowherd, around 1780, Pencil
    Oct. 26, 2024

    J. KLENGEL (*1751) after LORRAIN (*1600), The cowherd, around 1780, Pencil

    Est: €600 - €800

Johann Christian Klengel (1751 Kesseldorf - 1824 Dresden) after Claude Lorrain (1600 Chamagne, Lorraine - 1682 Rom): The cowherd, c. 1780, Pencil Technique: Pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower right monogrammed: "C. Kl". Date: c. 1780 Description: Johann Christian Klengel came from a peasant family. The fact that he was able to develop his talent and become a highly respected professor of landscape and animal painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden was thanks to enlightened personalities such as the director general of the Academy of Fine Arts, Christian Ludwig von Hagedorn, who was committed to promoting talented children from the state. Klengel, whose development was closely followed during his education, was the first graduate of this academy, who was also to teach there himself at a young age. It was certainly his village background that made him so suited to the peculiarities of landscape painting. The repertoire of pictorial elements was not really extensive in this subject. It is all the more astonishing how he "discovered" it anew, as it were, varied it, combined it and gained different aspects from it. He was able to depict a theme such as that of the shepherd with his flock on the banks of a river as a realistic scene seemingly taken from reality. Keywords: Arcadian landscape, shepherd, cows, river, 18th century, Classicism, Landscape, Germany, Size: Paper: 13,6 cm x 20,5 cm (5,4 x 8,1 in)
