[BUDÉ (Louis). CALVIN (Jean)] Les Pseaumes de David traduicts selon la vérité hébraïque, avec annotations tresutiles, par Louis Budé. Fort vol. in-12 (14,7 x 9,1 cm), veau brun, sur les plats vaste décor d'entrelacs et fleurons à froid, dos à nerfs orné à froid (reliure du temps). Première édition de cette traduction donnée par Louis Budé et précédée d'une préface de Jean Calvin « touchant l'utilité des Pseaumes, & de la translation présente ». La Revue d'histoire et de philosophie religieuses (n° 2-3 de 1962), dans l'article de R. Peter, « Calvin et la traduction des Psaumes de Louis Budé », indique : « certains exemplaires, destinés à la diffusion en France, omettent sur le titre le lieu d'impression et ne font mention de Calvin ni sur le titre, ni au début de la préface », ce qui fait de notre exemplaire un exemplaire de première émission. L'article indique également que ce texte était « demeuré inconnu aux éditeurs des Opera Calvini » ( Ioannis Calvini opera quae supersunt omnia, 59 volumes, Brunswick, 1863-1900). D'après Peter toujours, il ne subsisterait qu'une dizaine d'exemplaires de cette édition. Louis Budé, sieur de La Motte, était le sixième fils de l'humaniste Guillaume Budé. À la différence de son père, il embrassa la Réforme protestante et se retira avec plusieurs de ses frères à Genève, où il mourut en mai 1551, peu de temps avant la parution de l'ouvrage. Précieux exemplaire, interfolié couvert de notes manuscrites de différentes mains du temps (au moins deux, dont une jolie écriture en lettre flamande fine), se disposant aussi bien dans la marge, entre les lignes que sur les feuillets ajoutés. Belle provenance, des bibliothèques Stroehlin et Théodore Belin. Ernest Stroehlin (1844-1907), historien du protestantisme, possédait une des plus importantes bibliothèques sur le sujet. Il fut également membre du Comité pour l'érection du premier monument expiatoire de Champel, en hommage à Michel Servet exécuté par Jean Calvin, qui fut inauguré en 1903. Mors fendus, dos et coins frottés, petites restaurations. Mouillures.
