  • CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962). VOISIN AUTOMOBILES. 1923. 47¼x30½ inches, 120x77½ cm. Devambez, Paris.

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962). VOISIN AUTOMOBILES. 1923. 47¼x30½ inches, 120x77½ cm. Devambez, Paris.

    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) VOISIN AUTOMOBILES. 1923. 47¼x30½ inches, 120x77½ cm. Devambez, Paris. Condition B+: overpainting, replaced losses and repaired tears in margins; overpainting over creases and abrasions in image; slight foxing in image; red attenuated. Framed. In 1923, Gabriel Voisin, the luxury car manufacturer, commissioned Loupot (who had just returned to Paris after years in Switzerland) to design a pair of posters promoting his automobiles. The results are two dramatically different images. This poster is minimalistic, with a small red car against what is essentially an all-white background. The second image is the exact opposite - a colorless car starkly highlighted against a vividly-drawn, verdant forest depicted in a Cezanne-esque style (See Swann sale 2449 Lot 97). The effect these two images had was such that R.L. Dupuy, the head of a prominent Parisian advertising agency at the time, remarked that the posters "dropped like two stones in the frog-pond of the advertising imagination" (Weill p. 207). Crouse p. 54, Loupot 50, 1er Salon 52, Modern Poster 172, Reina Sofia p. 143.

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962). PEUGEOT / LA GRANDE MARQUE NATIONALE. 1926. 43¾x62¾ inches, 111x159½ cm. Les Belles Affiches, Paris.

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) PEUGEOT / LA GRANDE MARQUE NATIONALE. 1926. 43¾x62¾ inches, 111x159½ cm. Les Belles Affiches, Paris. Condition B+: replaced losses with overpainting in margins, some into image; repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; unobtrusive bleach spots in image. Framed. Loupot summed up his work in the following way, "The lazy eye must be continuously surprised by a simple and perfect graphic art" (Weill p. 208), and in this stunning, audacious Art Deco image, Loupot displays a masterful ability to convey speed. He depicts the front of a vehicle ascending a hill, vibrating with the energy beneath its hood and powering its mighty engine. The splash of color overlapping the car is the French tricolor cockade, not only blurry in the vehicle's ascent, but also a perfect visual connection to Peugeot's slogan on the poster, "the great national brand." CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962). ST. RAPHAËL. 1938. 62½x47 inches, 158¾x119½ cm. Courbet, Paris.

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) ST. RAPHAËL. 1938. 62½x47 inches, 158¾x119½ cm. Courbet, Paris. Condition A-: expertly-repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. From 1937 to 1960, Loupot worked hand in hand with Max Augier, the advertising director of St. Raphaël, creating a series of posters that tell of a unique saga in the story of advertising. This is the third poster Loupot designed for the company and the first with a prevailing sense of geometric harmony and balance (Loupot p. 91). It was also the beginning of a years-long campaign in which Loupot gradually moved towards creating more and more abstracted, geometric stylizations of the two waiters and his continuous transformation of the typography of the company's logo. Rare. We can locate only 4 other copies at auction since 1998. Crouse p. 193, Loupot 105, Reina Sofia p. 133.

    Est: $3,000 - $4,000

CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) EXPOSITION INTERNATIONALE ARTS DÉCORATIFS ET INDUSTRIELS MODERNES. 1925. 23¾x15¾ inches, 60¼x40 cm. Les Editions de L'Image de France, Paris. Condition A-: slight time-staining and minor abrasions at edges; minor abrasions along vertical and horizontal folds. Another of the four official designs chosen by a jury to promote the Exposition Internationale Des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Printed with only three colors, the image of smoke from factory chimneys morphing into the petals of a rose (one of the most popular decorative elements of the period) symbolizes the connection between art and industry within the Art Deco movement. As in many of his posters, Loupot uses vibrating tones to frame his image. This is the smaller format. CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) PKZ / BURGER - KEHL & C. 1921. 49¾x35¼ inches, 125¼x89½ cm. Wolfsberg, Zurich. Condition B: upper and side margins entirely replaced; creases, abrasions and restoration in image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on Chartex. A dapper gentleman, holding his cane in the air, stands monumentally in the foreground. He is backed by a painterly, diagonal swath of what could pass for a billowing fire, but is more likely the vibrant autumn foliage - with a few leaves scattered on the ground behind him. Loupot's use of color - especially his signature orange and complementary blue & green tones, results in an eye-catching, energetic composition. Loupot / Zagrodzki 45, Loupot 14, Loupot Peintres 45, Weill 431, Plakat Schweiz p. 136.

  • Charles Loupot, Cointreau
    Nov. 12, 2024

    Charles Loupot, Cointreau

    Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Charles Loupot Cointreau 1930 63 h x 47.25 w in (160 x 120 cm) Loupot created two posters for Cointreau using the image of the commedia dell'arte clown Pierrot; one male (see PAI-XLV, 369) and one female, as seen here. Pierrot had been a staple of advertising for more than 30 years and Loupot was brought in to give a much-needed update to the clown. Loupot abstracts and stylizes the character into Cubist forms defined by a textural orange peel which refers to the sour orange whose peel flavors this curacao liqueur. The clown's nose clip is not just an eye-catching device—Loupot borrowed the accessory from photographs of the famed mime artist Najac as Pierrot. Charles Loupot Cuir : Maquette c. 1936 gauche and ink on paper 60.625 h x 44.5 w in (154 x 113 cm) To promote leather goods, Loupot created this brilliantly large and imposing maquette. It's the original project before the client's final lettering, which would continue the thought "Rien ne remplace" (nothing replaces) with "le cuir" (leather) at the far bottom. Provenance: The Loupot Estate Exhibited: Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris Literature: Loupot, 75 (var); Loupot/Zagrodzki, p. 104 (var); PAI-XCII, 264 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

    Jul. 11, 2024

    St. Raphaël / Quinquina. 1948.

    Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 1/4 x 61 1/2 in./117.7 x 156 cm PRINTER: Affiches Gaillard, Paris DESCRIPTION: Loupot created a number of posters for this brand of bitters; here we see the streamlined incarnation of the two waiters who would become the company trademark. Throughout their evolution, two elements of their first rendering remained constant: their comic contrast in physique and their red and white colors. This also cements St. Raphaël's cursive logo; Loupot dismantled the old all-capital letter format and introduced this personalized product signature in 1938—which the company continues to use to this day. This is the head-on version of the waiters that the company settled on in 1945. This poster was used by St. Raphaël largely in Paris metro stations. This is the smaller format. • Valentine. 1932.
    Jul. 11, 2024

    Valentine. 1932.

    Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 9 1/2 x 12 1/4 in./24 x 31 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: In his poster life, Loupot’s famous Valentine harlequin would trade his spray gun for a brush in order to get his point across. In fact, the harlequin with the clearly delineated diamonds would evolve into nothing more than a solid flat black figure or line drawing to better show off the colorful Valentine palette behind him. Here, in a more recently discovered smaller, in-store display format (which easily could have been used as a mailer as well), his avid brusher is captured in the process of making a blue chair goldenrod, while the background burst and can-enhancing triangles hint at the broad, profound Valentine prismatic array. It’s a neat concept from the master colorist who can make even black look brilliant. The figure of the jolly painter himself is still used by the company today. (Art Deco; Artist: Loupot)

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 3/4 x 62 in./118.7 x 157.5 cm PRINTER: Édition Belles Affiches, Paris DESCRIPTION: It is interesting to compare this fanciful Deco image with Cappiello's poster for Nitrolian (see PAI-XC, 192). Both advertise quick-drying paint; however, where one uses visual hyperbole, the other presents stylish elegance. This is one of a few designs Loupot created for Valentine paint. ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 3/4 x 62 5/8 in./119 x 159 cm PRINTER: Imp. Henri Burg, Paris DESCRIPTION: In this rare and inspired design by Loupot, a stylized Deco figure spray paints a circular rainbow on a white wall. Unlike many of his other posters from the period, Loupot chose to stray from his typical primary color palette in order to better showcase the fine gradations available when using Valentine paints. ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 5/8 x 62 3/4 in./118.4 x 159.5 cm PRINTER: Les Belles Affiches, Paris DESCRIPTION: O Cap shampoo is not only “for the hair,” as the slogan says; in Loupot’s image, it is the hair—a soft white head full of it, foaming straight up out of the bottle. Completing the design is a triangle of type like the lower half of an hourglass through which our eye is funneled from product to brand name. It’s one of Loupot’s very finest works. St. Raphaël / Quinquina. 1948.

    Est: $2,000 - $2,500

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 23 3/4 x 31 1/2 in./60.2 x 80 cm PRINTER: Affiches Gaillard, Paris DESCRIPTION: Loupot created a number of posters for this brand of bitters; here we see the streamlined incarnation of the two waiters who would become the company trademark.
