                Charles Loupot, Cointreau

                Est: $4,000 - $5,000

Charles Loupot Cointreau 1930 63 h x 47.25 w in (160 x 120 cm) Loupot created two posters for Cointreau using the image of the commedia dell'arte clown Pierrot; one male (see PAI-XLV, 369) and one female, as seen here. Pierrot had been a staple of advertising for more than 30 years and Loupot was brought in to give a much-needed update to the clown. Loupot abstracts and stylizes the character into Cubist forms defined by a textural orange peel which refers to the sour orange whose peel flavors this curacao liqueur. The clown's nose clip is not just an eye-catching device—Loupot borrowed the accessory from photographs of the famed mime artist Najac as Pierrot. Les Belles Affiches, Paris Literature: Loupot/Zagrodzki, 86B; Affiche Reclame, 19; PAI-LXXXII, 338 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

                Est: $2,500 - $3,000

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 1/4 x 61 1/2 in./117.7 x 156 cm PRINTER: Affiches Gaillard, Paris DESCRIPTION: Loupot created a number of posters for this brand of bitters; here we see the streamlined incarnation of the two waiters who would become the company trademark. Throughout their evolution, two elements of their first rendering remained constant: their comic contrast in physique and their red and white colors. This also cements St. Raphaël's cursive logo; Loupot dismantled the old all-capital letter format and introduced this personalized product signature in 1938—which the company continues to use to this day. This is the head-on version of the waiters that the company settled on in 1945. This poster was used by St. Raphaël largely in Paris metro stations. This is the smaller format. Valentine. 1932.

                Est: $1,200 - $1,500

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 9 1/2 x 12 1/4 in./24 x 31 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: In his poster life, Loupot’s famous Valentine harlequin would trade his spray gun for a brush in order to get his point across. In fact, the harlequin with the clearly delineated diamonds would evolve into nothing more than a solid flat black figure or line drawing to better show off the colorful Valentine palette behind him. Here, in a more recently discovered smaller, in-store display format (which easily could have been used as a mailer as well), his avid brusher is captured in the process of making a blue chair goldenrod, while the background burst and can-enhancing triangles hint at the broad, profound Valentine prismatic array. It’s a neat concept from the master colorist who can make even black look brilliant. The figure of the jolly painter himself is still used by the company today. (Art Deco; Artist: Loupot)

ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 3/4 x 62 in./118.7 x 157.5 cm PRINTER: Édition Belles Affiches, Paris DESCRIPTION: It is interesting to compare this fanciful Deco image with Cappiello's poster for Nitrolian (see PAI-XC, 192). Both advertise quick-drying paint; however, where one uses visual hyperbole, the other presents stylish elegance. This is one of a few designs Loupot created for Valentine paint. ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 46 3/4 x 62 5/8 in./119 x 159 cm PRINTER: Imp. Henri Burg, Paris DESCRIPTION: In this rare and inspired design by Loupot, a stylized Deco figure spray paints a circular rainbow on a white wall. Unlike many of his other posters from the period, Loupot chose to stray from his typical primary color palette in order to better showcase the fine gradations available when using Valentine paints. Completing the design is a triangle of type like the lower half of an hourglass through which our eye is funneled from product to brand name. It’s one of Loupot’s very finest works. ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 35 5/8 x 50 1/8 in./90.3 x 127.4 cm PRINTER: R. Marsens, Lausanne DESCRIPTION: Loupot created three designs for Canton Furriers in Lausanne; this image of a fur-swaddled, ivory-skinned woman with a bee-stung pout first appeared in 1924 (see PAI-LXVIII, 473). In the early 1930s, the background color changed to blue and would remain so throughout a variety of address changes for the company. This is the third edition in the series with the 20 Rue de Bourg address, printed from the same lithographic stones as the original. Asked why the black background was replaced by blue over time, the chief of operations, Richard Canton, revealed that blue provided better visibility during the winter months. The company repeatedly used the services of Loupot, as he perfectly captured the decadent nature of the product. ARTIST: CHARLES LOUPOT (1892-1962) SIZE: 9 3/8 x 12 1/8 in./23.8 x 31 cm DESCRIPTION: In his poster life, Loupot’s famous Valentine harlequin would trade his spray gun for a brush in order to get his point across. In fact, the harlequin with the clearly delineated diamonds would evolve into nothing more than a solid flat black figure or line drawing so as to better show off the colorful Valentine palette behind him.

Loupot was one of four artists selected to create posters for the event; the rose billowing upwards from the factory below symbolizes the cooperation of art and industry. As the Art Deco era had only just officially begun, Loupot's style is still more expressionistic and painterly—but the typography is pure Art Deco. This is the smaller format. Courbet, Paris DESCRIPTION: In this 8-sheet creation—his second for the apéritif producers, and one of only three known copies in this largest format—we see the attendant pair relaxing after the completion of their shift, enjoying a nip of the beverage that they faithfully tout. Not surprisingly, opposites attract: red likes white, white likes red, and in Loupot’s talented hands, both drinks look enticing, refreshing, and delicious. “Loupot once more leaves the two garçons their two-dimensionality in order to put them in a situation, transformed into consumers of their apéritifs. The publication of this version also provided an opportunity to experiment with its posting: the photographs of the time show this poster on slight inclines on the palisades and surrounded with bands of text laid out in a very erudite way” (Loupot/Zagrodzki, p. 90).
