JOÃO LOURO (Lisbon, Portugal 1963). "United Killers of Sarajevo". 1993. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the back.

      Est: €12,000 - €14,000

JOÃO LOURO (Lisbon, Portugal 1963). "United Killers of Sarajevo". 1993. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the back. Measurements: 84 x 116 cm. Language has been João Louro's favorite means of expression, which in "United killers of Sarajevo" he links with the Benetton logo, replacing the brand's slogan ("united colors") with "united killers", in this corrosive proposal made during the war in the Balkans. Louro's painting maintains a dialogue with advertising, considering that the dominant iconography in today's society is supplied by advertising devices that wage another war, the economic one, to impose the consumption of one product instead of another. Louro's is a language based on minimal and conceptual art, with a special attention to the avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. He tries to trace a topography of time, with references that are personal but, above all, generational. Through the written word, Louro tries to revise the image of contemporary culture, basing his work on a set of representations and symbols of the collective visual universe. His lexicon is shaped by diverse influences that include structuralism and post-structuralism, as well as the work of Walter Benjamin, Guy Debord, Georges Bataille, Donald Judd and Marcel Duchamp. João Louro studied Architecture at the University of his native Lisbon, and painting at the Escola Ar.Co in the same city. A multidisciplinary artist, his work encompasses painting, sculpture, photography and video. He currently lives and works in Lisbon, and his work cannot be separated from the cultural horizon of modernity and post-industrial society, as well as containing a series of personal and generational references. Throughout his life, Louro has held solo exhibitions in Portugal, Italy, the United States and France. He has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions, and in 2015 he was Portugal's representative at the Venice Biennale. His work is held in private collections around the world and in institutions such as the ARCO Foundation in Madrid, the Purificación García Collection in Madrid, the Jumex Foundation in Mexico City, the CAlouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, the MACRO in Rome, the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego (California, United States), etc.

    • Joao Louro (né en 1963) Blind Image #136
      Oct. 15, 2015

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION: Acrylic on canvas signed and located at the back
