      • Original French Citroen Type 810 Poster by Pierre Louys
        Jun. 20, 2023

Original French Citroen Type 810 Poster by Pierre Louys

        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

In this full-of-sunshine poster, we see an eye-catching blue Citroen Type B10 parked in front of a beautiful lake with a tall castle and red roofed houses in the back. As part of the company's campaign to promote its new model, this poster was commissioned by Citroen to invite the viewers to join a pleasant road trip driving the gorgeous all-steel car across the European continent. While this poster was created in the early years of Citroen, they evolved to be an industry leader. Citroen is a major French automobile company founded in 1919 by industrialist Andre Gustave Citroen (1878 - 1935). The company has established its reputation through a series of world-leading innovations, such as the first mass-produced front wheel drive car, Traction Avant, and the world's first hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension system, among many others. The Citroen Type B10 is a Torpedo bodied car designed by the founder of the company between 1924 and 1925. It is the first car to use all-steel in Europe, and was manufactured using modern mass production technologies, a method that was applied by no other French automaker at the time. In addition, it is also the first European car produced by applying the pressed steel technologies, which during the 1930s would transform the economics of automobile production across Europe. This poster was designed by Pierre Louys, the in house graphic designer of Citroen. Formerly a medical student, Pierre Louys was only 24 years old when appointed as the art and photography director of Citroen. Louys' arrival marked the debut of a decade of revolutionary promotional activities for the company. With Louys, Citroen redirected the advertising strategy toward single message print ads as focusing on product attributes or the prestige of owning a Citroen. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

        May. 27, 2023

Barbier, Bilitis - 4 Pages with In Text Illustrations

        Est: $500 - $1,500

This sensual illustration from George Barbier was part of Pierre Louÿs's The Songs of Bilitis or Les Chansons de Bilitis. The work was published in Paris by Pierre Corrard in 1922. Barbier completed the original illustration with L. F. Schmied producing the woodcut pochoirs. The work was commissioned on the initiative of Louis Barthou, Jacques André, and Georges Miguet at the height of Barbier's talent. The Songs of Bilitis was a collection of erotic poetry with strong lesbian themes. Pierre Louÿs claimed that the poems were discovered by a Greek source that saw them inscribed on the walls of a tomb in Cyprus by Bilitis. This was eventually revealed as a hoax, but the forgery was so outstandingly done the work and author gained acclaim in their own right. Louÿs wrote in the dedication: "This little book of antique love is respectfully dedicated to the young ladies of the society of the future." The poems were written in the manner of Sappho. George Barbier (1882-1932) was one of the greatest French artists of the early 20th century. He first exhibited in 1911 at the age of 29 where he gained many commissions to design costumes and illustrate works, fashion in particular. Barbier led a group nicknamed by Vogue "The Knights of the Bracelet" formed from artists from the Ecole des Beaux Arts and including Monvel, Brissaud, Iribe, Lepape, and Martin. Beyond his illustrations, Barbier created jewelry, glass and wallpaper design.
