The only major painter to come from the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico, Charles Lovato became a painter of abstract subjects, muralist, illustrator, poet and craftsman. His paintings were unique and were unrelated to Pueblo traditions. As a jeweler, Lovato did heishi necklaces, for which the Santo Domingo Pueblo is well known. At an early age, he was adopted by his grandmother, Monica Silva, who was a potter. He served in the U.S. Navy and in Santa Fe studied art under Jose Ray Toledo. He settled in Pena Blanca, New Mexico, and after 1967, did paintings, many which were accompanied by one of his poems. He explained that sometimes the poem came first and sometimes were written in response to the painting. Charles Lovato died in 1987 at the Pueblo. At an early age, he was adopted by his grandmother, Monica Silva, who was a potter. He served in the U.S. Navy and in Santa Fe studied art under Jose Ray Toledo. He settled in Pena Blanca, New Mexico, and after 1967, did paintings, many which were accompanied by one of his poems. He explained that sometimes the poem came first and sometimes were written in response to the painting. Exhibition venues include the Heard Museum Invitational in Phoenix in 1969, and the 1972 Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial in New Mexico. Charles Lovato died in 1987 at the Pueblo.           Offered in this lot is a signed and numbered limited edition lithograph by Charles Lovato. Charles Lovato (1937-1987) was one of the most noted painters to come out of the Santo Domingo Pueblo. He rarely painted with any traditional influence, opting for an abstract style. While his paintings made Lovato famous, he was an artist in many different mediums. He was a poet, muralist, illustrator, and craftsman. The lithograph shows an elder Indian, a bear paw, a turtle, a bear head, a buck deer, and a turkey. The Lithograph is resigned and numbered in the lower left corner and the original signature is in the lower right corner. The shown art is 18" X 11 1/2" and it is matted in a frame. The frame measures 24 1/4" X 18 1/2". The Lithograph is in very good condition; there is a small break in the lower right corner of the glass.
