Rupert Scott Lovejoy (American/Maine, 1885-1975), "The Old Rain Barrel", 1973, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, sheet 20 in. x 14 in., framed. Provenance: Natchez Art Association. Note: As a dentist, Rupert Scott Lovejoy only had time to paint and attend art school in the evenings and often decorated his office with his works. In 1915, Impressionist painter Walter Griffin came to Lovejoy for dental work and took notice of his obvious artistic talent. Griffin mentored Lovejoy and encouraged him to create art on a full-time basis. Lovejoy primarily painted the landscapes, farmhouses and coastal scenes of Portland, Maine. In the work offered here, Lovejoy captured a simple rain barrel, and the detail of the aged wood, water and fall leaves creates a scene of serenity and simple pleasures.
