Here Low depicts an episode from Act II, scene vii, in which Jaques tells of meeting a fool in the forest who "...drew a dial from his poke,/And, looking on it with lack-lustre eye,/Says very wisely, 'It is ten o'clock:/Thus we may see,' Quoth he, 'how the world wags:/'Tis but an hour ago since it was nine,/And after one hour more 'twill be eleven;/And so, from hour to hour, we ripe and ripe,/And then, from hour to hour, we rot and rot;/And thereby hangs a tale.'" He studied with academic painter Jean-Leon Gerome from 1872-1877, in Paris, France. He was the second husband of artist Mary MacMonnies Low, and a friend of writer Robert Louis Stevenson. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, New York City, elected an Associate in 1888, and an Academician in 1890. He exhibited at the National Academy for 60 years.In March 1901, Will Low wrote an article for International Quarterly, "National Expression in American Art," in which, defending the achievements of American painters of the day versus the Europeans, he sought to tie American art to the great traditions of the past, that were being carried forward in the America of his day. American artists were "another link in the long chain which brings from Greece through Italy and France to the shore of our western hemisphere." He also wrote art criticism for Scribner's, McClure's and Century.Low is represented in the collection of the National Academy by a drawing, in graphite, black ink, charcoal, and watercolor, of a Greek muse for the cover of the Academy's Sixty Sixth Annual Exhibition in 1891. Folinet Fils Lefebrve Paris'.Various marks and labels to back of stretcher and frame, including an early label noting lawrence park, bronxville, ny's art colony.  Will Hicok Low, born in albany, new york in 1853 ,was a leading muralist and figurative painter who explored both barbizon landscapes and colorful victorian style. He was the second husband of artist Mary MacMonnies Low, and a friend of writer Robert Louis Stevenson. He studied with academic painter Jean-Leon Gerome and Carolus-Duran from 1872-1877 in paris. As a member of the national academy of design, new york city,  he was elected an associate in 1888, and an academician in 1890. He exhibited at the national academy for sixty years. Low was also well respected as a muralist with commissions that included the waldorf astoria. Will Low was one of  bronxville, n.y.'s earliest residents of lawrence park, a community of artists, arriving in 1897. Will studied many art forms, but excelled as a muralist. Notable among his many accomplishments were the thirty-six twelve-foot high panels for the rotunda of the new york state education building in albany, which he painted in his bronxville studio between 1913 and 1918. He finished his last painting, a mural donated to the bronxville school, only a few hours before his death. His works are held in numerous museums including the the smithsonian, the metropolitan museum of art, the brooklyn museum, the high museum of art, among others.

        Will Low (1853-1933) American artist and writer on art. He was born at Albany, New York. In 1873 he entered the atelier of Jean-Léon Gérôme in the École des Beaux Arts at Paris, subsequently joining the classes of Carolus-Duran, with whom he remained until 1877. Returning to New York, he became a member of the Society of American Artists in 1878 and of the National Academy of Design in 1890. His pictures of New England types, and illustrations of John Keats, brought him into prominence. Subsequently he turned his attention to decoration, and executed panels and medallions for the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, a panel for the Essex County Court House in Newark, New Jersey as well as numerous panels for private residences and stained glass windows for various churches, including St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church, Newark. He was an instructor in the schools of Cooper Union , New York, during 1882 to 1885, and in the school of the National Academy of Design from 1889 to 1892. Low, who is known to a wider circle as the friend of R. L. Stevenson, published some reminiscences, A Chronicle of Friendships, 1873-1900 (1908). A mural by him is located in the Howard M. Metzenbaum U.S. Courthouse. Original auto-lithograph, plate signed, 12 x 8 flush. Autolithography means an original image made directly on the stone or plate. This is from a portfolio done for the American Artists' War Emergency Fund, one of the numerous war activities of the National Arts Club of New York, its object being to aid American Artist Soldiers or their dependents. This project was done in 1918. Slight faults bottom edge [handling] are not important.
