Lubeck was granted a scholarship to New York's National Academy of Design, where he studied with the distinguished portraitist Laos Markos and landscape painter Maxwell S. Simpson. During his military service as a medic in Vietnam, his subjects were often Vietnamese people whom Lubeck met during his time in that country.
