CONTACT US SKU#: 128883 US Shipping $149 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: John Seymour Lucas, British (1849-1923). John Seymour Lucas was born in London in 1849, the nephew of a portrait painter to the Court. With the encouragement of an uncle, the boy was first apprenticed to a wood carver and then to a sculptor. At sixteen, Lucas began a course of study with his cousin, John Templeton Lucas, a noted genre painter. Five years later he entered the St. Martin's Lane Art School and eventually the Royal Academy, where he began exhibiting in 1872. Lucas was influenced by Sir Walter Scott, the writer and by Ernest Meissonier, an artist who specialized in cavaliers as subjects. Lucas also made trips to Amsterdam and Madrid where he came under the spell of Velasquez. By the mid-1870's, the artists small genre works had given way to 17th and 18th century masculine 'costume' pictures of historical significance. These established and secured his reputation and he devoted himself almost entirely to them."Such a talent," wrote Adrian Bury for Connoisseur in 1951, "demands imagination, scholarship craftsmanship and an indefatigable insistence on detail: and these qualities Lucas possessed to a remarkable degree."The artist exhibited regularly at the annual Royal Academy exhibitions in London and was elected an Academician in 1898. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a member of the Kernoozers Club - a society that met to discuss arts, armor, etc. His own collection of antique costumes was acquired by the London Museum upon his death. John's son Lucas Sydney Seymour (1878-1954) also painted portraits and genre.

John Seymour Lucas, RA RI, British 1849-1923- Portrait of Mrs Arthur Tooth, standing three-quarter length, leaning on a plinth, and holding a stem of roses; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Seymour Lucas / 1897.' (lower left), further signed and inscribed on an old label 'Mrs Arthur Tooth / by / Seymour Lucas / Woodchurch Road / West Hampstead' on the reverse of the frame, 140.2 x 99.4 cm. Provenance: The sitter; thence by descent. Exhibited: London, Royal Academy, 1897, no.422. Note: The sitter, Louisa Hartley Tooth (1859-1903), neé Beningfield, was the great-grandmother of the present owner. The portrait was commissioned by her husband Arthur Tooth (1828-1900). A photograph of Louisa with her four children, taken just a few years after the completion of the present work, is held at London's National Portrait Gallery [NPG x76187]. Lucas's artistic education included extensive travels around Europe, particularly Holland and Spain, where he studied the Flemish and Spanish masters. As his reputation grew, he increasingly mixed in society circles, and became firm friends with the esteemed portraitist John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) who was his almost exact contemporary. Indeed, a portrait of Lucas executed by Sargent is held at the National Portrait Gallery, London [NPG 5219]. Lucas's 100 or so major oil paintings included prestigious commissions from the Houses of Parliament, the Royal Exchange, and the Royal Collection. His skillfully rendered compositions, admiration for colourful detail, veracity, and his taste for the theatrical were well suited to the discerning tastes of his late Victorian audience.
